hey i just got a td-04 that is going onto my ej18 and i was just wondering if a turbo can be mounted in any direction? for example instead of the air intake facing horizontal can it face up towards the hood, or at any other angle?

just thinking up different places that i could mount the turbo:biggrin:

i would keep it flat. i know that the rally cars mount them facing up but not sure what they do to keep the seals from blowing.

do you think it would be safe to mount it at an angle that is less than 45' from flat? and what would be the problems i would run into? im trying to make this thing like no other

well you have to make it work though? when you tip it the oil has a harder time getting out of the turbo. which puts stress on the seals and might blow them faster.

ok, now for a few more questions, with the td04:
what is the internal wastegate set to and can it be adjusted to 5psi?
do i need the restrictor pill and wastegate actuator for it to work?
would i be better off getting an external wastegate if im only boosting 5-10psi at most?
and with this turbo will a small fmic work i fi cut the piping length in half?

    any input is welcome

yes it can be adjusted, no a fmic would be a waste with that little amount of PSI, if i ever figure out the problems on my car you can come look at it at firestone

You'd be better off with a small top mount. A wrx or forester xt one would be fine (like AWDL is using) The wastegate pressure on that turbo should be 7psi right now. You shouldn't need anything for it to run wastegate pressure, just leave the air connection to the wastegate off. The spring will take care of the rest.

i would stick to a top mount. thats a small turbo and does not need a fmic. if you go external waste gate you don't need a restrictor pill but internal i think you do. don't know what spring comes in there but i don't think its over 8 psi spring.

Just to reiterate, the wastegate operates on a 7psi spring, you shouldn't need any restrictors or boost controllers or anything to achieve 7psi.

you mean run a line from the nipple to the actuator, otherwise the w/g wont do anything KABOOM!

so right now im thinking of the turbo mounted where the air box is currently located, the up-pipe and downpipe are routed through holes cut in the sheetmetal, air filter in the fender , and possibly a reversed intake manifold with a small intercooler mounted upfrontish.

Turbos are fine when mounted less than 45deg.
