turning rotors? any recommendations?

    looks like my oem rotors are starting to warp. anyone know of a reputable shop that can turn them? lmk

    Sometimes they cannot turn out the warp so be prepared to buy new rotors. If it were me, I would not even take a chance and just buy new ones anyways.

    How many miles on the OE rotors?

    I turned my stock ones once with success, they were slightly warped too. Now I switched to brembo blanks which were $50 each for my 4 pots that I got.

    You probably have pad deposits on the rotors. HIGHLY unlikely the rotors are warped unless you have been doing some serious track days. Its just not going to happen on the street unless you drag the brakes for many miles.

    Why not just get new ones and not worry about if it will fix it? The "cheap" ones at Napa are under 40 a set I think.

    Webcrawler's right about new ones being inexpensive.

    With only 40k on the OE rotors I'd probably turn them and get some decent ceramic pads. Checker Auto sells Raybestos Quiet Stops for $56 a set.

    okay no, its extremely common for subaru rotors to warp, expecially in larger cars like legacies, there is nothing special about subaru rotors that make then resistant to warping. maybe not so much on the sti though.

    from what i read and researched, oem rotors(turned or not) can last a long time compared to napa,autozone,etc...

    dont listen to this guy. normal drivers can feel rotor warp with a difference at any point of the rotor at .002" it happens on EVERY car, no matter how you drive it.

    cause they can be warped straight out of the box.. we have had to turn brand new ones on occasion... and $10 to turn a factory one compared to $40 is still $60 cheaper in my book... thats one reason....

    sorry to burst your bubble.. but Russ is correct... but just not exactly 100%.. i would say 98% ha ha ha

    it can be warped due to cheap material used in most rotors nowadays, but mostly it will be a combination of both pad deposit and warpage from heat retention

    Yes, and yes. And as russ said, unless you're seriously beating on these things in Nürburgring fashion, you are probably more susceptible to pad build up than rotor warpage due to massive heat retention.

    and an untold number of discs with pad material unevenly deposited on the friction surfaces

    this is whats known as 'warped', out of parallelism, or lateral runout.

    or as they tell you at a dealership.. your rotors are 'GLAZED'...... as they willbe 5 mins after machining them...


    OP - go get them mic'd then if enough meat left... get em turned...
