So I was always weary of attempting to take out my up pipe because for most people that know what they are doing, it takes them from 2-5 hours do remove it. Well last night i did mine in about an hour. Whats the trick you ask? The only thing you need to do is take off o the passengers side chunk of exhaust manilfold then unbolt the up pipe from the turbo and slide the little bugger right now. It really is that easy.

There are a few other small things like unplugging the sensor in the up pipe, and if you still have the stock up pipe you might need to just loosen the motor mount bolt and jack the oilpan/engine up an inch of two, but i didnt even need to do that. if you do need to jack the engine up you will need to put a block of wood on the jack to disperse the pressure so you dont damage the oil pan.

And putting it back in is just as easy, just slide it right back in.

No more paying outrageous money to get it installed.

sounds good. if you could break loose the nuts/bolts on the heat shield on the passenger manifold, that would make the job quicker. just break them loose then tighten them back up. i spent a decent amount of time messing with rusted bolts.

you think $70 shipped is a good deal for a sti uppipe with around 7000 miles on it?

AFAIK, the uppipe bolts that hold the uppipe to the turbo is blocked from the OEM heatshield, isn't it? The heat shield itself took me ~1 hour to do when I had no experience with a turbo exhaust.

Unfortuniately, you are steering the members the wrong direction. Yes your method is correct if you already have an aftermarket uppipe installed. If you have the OEM cat in place it will not come out with your method due to the larger OD.

Next, I would never advise anyone to jack up a motor/car by a spamped sheetmetal drain pan due to the possbility of denting the pan. Yes, I do use a jack to lift the motor but I use a piece of wood to distribute the force in a different location as well as loosening all the motor mounts.

I am sorry you now feel that the 150.00 I charged is not resoniable. I actually quote people 250.00 to do the UP/TBE combo and refund any money that would put me over the rate that I charge. Some cars are easier to work on that others some parts fit better than others so there are some differences. That is why I do it by the hour. I have done so many of these and never once have I had a complaint and I make sure to ask if they feel the price is fair after the work done.

i obviously wouldnt put the jack directly on the oil pan. i've heard many people getting the stock up pipe off by jacking up the motor a bit.

could you please tell me where i said that you charging me 150 was unreasonable? i was stating a fact that it sucks to buy a pipe for $80 then have to pay double that just to get it installed. sheesh relax a bit.

Might want to modify that original post so a noob dosn't get themself in a pickle. It takes more than a "little bit" with a catted OEM and I wouldn't want to damage the vulkinisation in the motor mount by tweeking it.

    sort of on topic...

Anyone got a good place to get UP/DP gasket sets? I have some exhaust leaks under the hood I want to get taken care of before I get it tuned.

I second the Crucial Gaskets..as I have them in my car! As for the install...eh hemm, thanks for the call Justin! I would feel safe lifting the motor by the oil pan as I do it all the time! I have yet to dent one. I wouldn't do it to support the engine for a long period of time, and you can always shove a 20mm socket or bigger in between the mount and the sub-frame to support it for longer time frames. Oil pans are quite strong when not suddenly shocked like from a hammer blow or cinder blocks that people hit in the road.

The best piece of advice I can give though is spray all of the heat shield bolts, and turbo-to-downpipe bolts with "PB Blaster" or any other good penetrating oil to prevent breakage when loosening!

I'm always up for helping out too, as long as you got the space!

    IMHO, diy > *

Isn't that kind of the whole point of modding your car? ;)

And yeah, I'll have to 3rd the Crucial gasket kits. No leaks here.
