There's your problem right there. Mobil-1 isn't a good oil to be using, as it turns to the consistency of water at about the 2000 mile mark. If you are at 4k miles without an oil change on Mobil-1 Syn 5w-30, your oil is piss thin, and your drive train will become clackity clackity. My suggestion to you, before tearing things apart and doing valve lash stuff, would be to go get yourself a jug of Rotella 5w40 HD from Walmart. I haven't purchased it there in a while, but it used to be about 18 bucks for one of those 5qt jugs. Get a new filter. Change your oil. Then report back.

The subaru valvetrain is chattery as a rule. So don't read too much into it. Running a more consistent oil will help quiet it down.

I meant 4 quarts. I was thinking "5 quarts go in the Subaru" and mistyped.
