Hey guys, i just got an air compressor(central pneumatic its 8 gal 2hp 115psi max) from harbor freight, and the impact gun is craftsman. the rated scfm on the air compressor is 5@90psi and the rate for the impact gun is 4.1@90psi and 350ft Lbs tq. got everything connected correctly(i think) and its not even strong enough to remove my lugnut bolts....is the air compressor at fault here or?...
Is your regulator set to 90 psi? What kind of hoes are you using? Those yellow curly things suck for decent air tools. Is there an adjustment on the gun that's turned down?
yeah its set at 90psi maybe alittle higher. im using goodyear 3/8 25ft hose. the gun is turned all the way up, still nothing. and i just bought the gun because the harbor freight gun was doing the same thing, and i thought that getting a better brand one will do differently. and yes i just oiled it before i used it. i just called harbor freight and thinking abuot just returning the air compressor and getting a bigger one... this is the air compressor i have. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=95386
As long as the compressor can supply a constant 90 psi, it should work. If you're using it continuously and the tank runs low on air, you just need to wait for it to catch up. When you pull the trigger, does it start off strong then get weaker within a half a second? that would indicate a flow problem. How tight are your lugs?
yeah, the meter would like go down abit when i use it. but shouldnt that first tiny bit of 90psi be sufficient to break the lugs loose. as for tightening, i just tighten till its tight.
Compressor is too small. 5cfm compressor and a 5cfm tool will not cut it. You should be running at least 10cfm on the compressor side, so you are looking at a 220v compressor. Russ
While I agree that this compress is too small, it's more because there is no way in hell an 8 gallon 2hp Harbor Freight compressor is providing 5cfm at 90psi. Most of HF's specs on their tools aren't exaggerated, they're flat out lies. I have regularly used my little Porter Cable suitcase type compressor (4 gal, 4hp?) to drive impact guns, and it cycles, a lot, but it provides plenty of torque for most things. If I really had to hammer on something for an extended time it wouldn't be able to keep up, but for 99% of stuff, it works alright.
Do yourself a favor and get a 60 gallon compressor. Yeah, getting it home can be a chore (I brought one home in my '92 Legcay wagon) but the effort is by far worth the outcome. A 60 gallon compressor with a decent 5hp motor can keep up with any impact, any rotary air tool, and can paint a car without issue. I found mine for $350 on CL. Be patient, and you can find the same deal. I actually missed a 80 gal 7.5 hp setup for $400 by 3 days. Anything is possible.
thing is, i need to haul it around with ease, bc my home dont have a garage..-__- and so i need to haul it back into my shed after im done.
HF probably rates there flow based on a straight dump to atm, thats how alot of pneumatic get there "high flow" ratings
