so, we've decided to go a bit more public with our string quartet....and I think a website would be an awesome step to get our name and contact info out there. now, I'm no n00b at the int4rw3bz0rz, but I've got no idea where to even start when it comes to hosting a website. sooo....could somebody point me in the right direction?
Are you wanting to host yourself or is it going to be on someone elses server? If you are going to host it yourself are you going to get a fixed IP address? Are you going to pay for a domain name? Lots of things to deside about. I think you have my number still. Give me a call.... I have a price for you for something else also.
ooooh oooooh. call john cherba, let me find his # http://www.johncherba.com/ 612.269.9555 he does pretty cool stuff, and he is into music. he could design and help you find a sp to fit your demand.
I don't have broadband at home. I'd like to, but don't want to pay for cable TV...but that's a different story. the point is that it won't be hosted here, it'd need to be on someone elses server. thanks for the contact disco...I'll give him a call you too matt
Bluehost hosts mnsubaru and I've been pretty happy thus far... we used dreamhost before but they oversold so bad I question the reliability.
I've been using PowWeb as my host for what seems like forever, though in reality only 7 years. Depending on what you're hosting they may be overkill though. I've only ever caught them down twice in those 7 years and it was resolved within hours. Their POP servers go down a little more often but they give you warning when they take them down and I've actually not had it happen in the past year since they moved to a new location. I've heard some nasty things about Dreamhost from plenty of others. I guess I got lucky when I arbitrarily picked a host. I didn't know you had a string quartet. How long y'all been playing?
I'm using Dreamhost. Aside from the flooding they recently had at the data warehouse, they are fine. (and cheap.) And I've never had a shut down due to "Too many connections" or whatever. Plus, for 9.78 for the first year including domain name registration, you really can't go wrong. (Ask me how )
thanks for all the recommendations! it looks like bluehost is just about perfect for what I want to do. well, I've been playing for most of my life, and in many different quartets. but we got a good group together this summer. and played about 8 weddings/receptions since. We thought a website would be a good idea.
I did the wedding circuit thing solo, or just myself and a pianist, when I came back from school and didn't have a group to play with (played with the Greater Grand Forks Symphony while at school, I was the entire string department at UND for 2 years). I was looking for a group to play with in the Cities but didn't find one I liked. Actually always wanted to do that Mendelssohn Octet for strings. When you get your site up post it up and I'll send some referrals your way.
