Around 55/60mph there was a common complaint of noise coming from the rear diff area. I believe it was something about the mounts acting like a "tuning fork" so to speak. Regardless it wouldn't be a bad idea to have some one go on a ride with you that could give you more insight.

Yea it's exactly around 55/60 mph think its safe to drive till I have it looked at? To be honest it sounds like tires making noise but goes away when I take my foot off the pedal.

I drive the same year WRX, and although it is heavily modded, I have noticed the same whine before. Nuke went for a ride with me before the modding, and after, and him,( along with others that know much more than me), have all said that it is just a gear whine. Nothing to be terribly concerned about. It doesn't seem to be hurting anything. Just turn up the tunes :D I'd think that if it were tires, you would notice it more frequently and when you are not accelearating.. but thats just my $.02. GL!

I have the same whine out of every car I've owned. Happens above 70mph. Her name is Janet.

Oh yeah, most likely normal gear noise in your case.

I also believe it is the rear diff. I encounter this same exact problem when i first bought my sti back then. It only whines at 60 plus mph. Get it replaced.

I don't believe this at all, your car either don't hit 60 or goes past it so quick you wouldn't hear anything

This is a possibility. Check the wheels for bad bearings. Also, if it could be a rear diff situation...maybe try to do a fluid check and swap?

Ok thanks I will check those. Will a wheel bearing make a noise like that at only 60mph?

That was how mine was. No matter what gear. 55mph it was there. If I got stuck in traffic at 55mph I went insane. 60 and up it was gone. If you can get on an empty road get up to the speed it happens and drive the car while swerving left and right and see if it gets worse on a certain side.

Yup, for me it ended up being my passenger front bearing.

hmm..I would have to guess maybe drivetrain then. My wheel bearing was pretty quiet cold and once warmed up it was louder. Try the swerve trick. If that doesnt change the noise it has to be drivetrain.

If it sounds like your tires but if its not your tires thats messed up then its your wheel bearing. I had the same problem a couple months back and I brought it in to morris subaru and they replaced it under warranty.

Don't see how it would be wheel bearing it literally only happens between 60 and 65 and under light acerleration?

So get someone else to drive for you. Get in the back seat listen down at the back of the center console then if your car has a pass through then open it and listen is it louder from there? I would list out my top choices:

    1) nothing
    2)wheel bearing
    3)prop shaft yolk bearing
    4)reduction shaft bearing
    5)rear diff
