i am loking at getting winter tires fairly soon. ya i know winter is ways off but i am thinking that i might eb able to get them cheaper int eh off season. what would you guys recommend. i am using stock rs wheels. i do alot of highway driving but i want some decent snow performance (ice reace here i come ) thoughts?
i loved my blizzaks last year worked great in the streets and on the lake at the ice race. If you ask techy what winter tires he is running i think a lot of people love that kind nokkian or somthing cant remember what kind, im sure he will chime in
I used Blizzak ws-50's this winter they were great although I have nothing to compare them to. It was also my my first winter with the car.
I've got Pirelli Winter Carving in 205/55/16. They made a huge difference traction wise, and they also handled fairly well considering they are winter tires. My friend had the WS-50s. They have better snow traction, but don't handle as well. Pirelli Winter Carving
Last winter I bought some Dunlop Wintersport M3s. Since I drive a ton of highway miles, which are mostly dry during winter, a big concern for me was millage. I wanted something that would last a couple seasons, and these had a better treadwear then most of the other snows I looked at. When I took them off this spring I hardly noticed any wear. I had it narrowed down to the wintersports or nokians. Went with the dunlops as they were cheaper and available when and where I wanted to get them.
I've been using the Blizzak REV01's and have had 'much fun' with them. I know they're winter tires but I don't have spare rims right now and extra space I want to give up. They have been fun in the warmer months as well, creating a lot of 'spray' for those tailgater's when it rains.
well last winter i used bald re92s and those did just great and this winter i will be rocking my bfg gforce sports
for non studded ice racing of high hp cars the blizzak revo-1 is becoming the tire to have at least according to some results from last winter. I like mine a lot but I took a chance buying them with no real history on the model. Theyre like WS10's but directional and have a multi compound tread. basically in the first 50% of the tread you get awesome ice traction, but on the 2nd 50% its about the same as any other snow tire. I like them a lot, saved my life a few times last winter as well. They suck on the road though, at least compared to decent street tires. I only use them when its white on the ground.
Nokian Hakka RSi if your driving is mostly ice (in the metro, or on the main freeways/highways). Nokian Hakka 2 if you venture further off the beaten path and into deep snow. There's a reason that nearly all rally teams in the US at snow/ice rallies run Hakkas, even though Blizzaks are cheaper.
good info. i am planinng (lol, like that ever works) on driving mostly pavement, so small amounts of snow (3"s or so) and ocasional ice spots. there are always a few trips into some deep stuff (6-8") abd of course i wanna be prepared for the ice race!!!!!! do you guys think i will be ablew to save more $$ by buying now? or should i hold off tell it gets closer.
I haven't seen deals on winter tires during the summer, but I guess I haven't looked either. The Tire Rack's prices haven't changed. I guess just get them whenever its convienient.
My family have been Blizzack fans since they first came out. A year ago we tried the Michelin Artic Alpin. They weren't as good and wore down faster, so were back to using Blizzacks for the winter. As far as getting cheaper winter tires in the summer, I think the price only reduces when they are trying to close them out.
Best Winter tires? I recently moved from Texas to the great state of Minnesota. Since my stock tires have about 15K on them I realize that I will need to replace them and will probably need some tires with a little more traction for the cold MN winters. Any suggestions on good winter tires?
I bought the Wintersport M3's also and they are ok at best. I rode in Matt's(Bikerboy's) RS swap at ice racing and the Nokians are the win. Those things grip like mad...as soon as these Wintersports die I'm getting a set of those on my winter rims.
Yeah, they did seem weak on the ice compared to some of the other tires. But otherwise, I'm happy with them. It's the first set of snows I've used so I don't have much to compare them to (they're WAY better than any all season i've had in the snow). I will also probably be trying the nokians when these wear out. But it seems like that's gonna take a while, which is what I wanted!
Talk to the dealership guys on the board here...I think all the local scoob dealerships can hook them up. Maybe talk to bikerboy also.
If you do find out, pass on the info. Besides, I'm sure whoever is selling them at a decent price wouldn't mind the extra business.
I bought my wintersports/rims from tire rack and I know the DO NOT carry Nokians. At least they didn't at the time I ordered mine.
Does the tread last long? My Blizzacks for my last car lasted 2 winters and still have 2-3 winters left to go.
i run the dunlop wintersports. they will let go sooner than i would like in the snow, but they are killer on cold dry pavement, which is 90% of what i'm doing. the other 10% being bouncing off one curb to another trying to be a mini solberg. i've had mine on for 3 seasons and there is alot of life left in them. when they die i'm gona most likely replace them with the same....
He's in Milwaukee, WI. Ships via Spee-Dee for a lot less than UPS or FedEx would cost from anywhere. And his prices have always been much, much lower than the local Subaru dealerships or the couple of other places that sell the Nokians locally.
my studded have been on my car 3 winters and there is still over half tread left. they are still on my car right now
