My friend has a 1998 Impreza Outback Sport that lost a timing belt. New belt is on, and of course there is damage. It runs! It idles pretty rough, but he's driving it and says it smooths out when upping the revs. Machanic says it's #3 cylinder. (Driver of passenger side? Not sure) Does anyone have a head laying around that we could just swap out? Not sure if this is recommeded. The piston may have some damage on top, but I've smoothed it out and not had any problems in the past on other engines. I would have to inspect the piston and bore once apart of course. Assuming this is an "in chassis" swap also. Anyway, trying to decide of we could just get a head, or if we have to take it to a machine shop for repairs. Anyone got anything? Thanks list!!
You might try going to u pull our parts. they have a decent collection of 2.2l cars there. I am not sure what they get for a head though. It would be wise to check the damage. However I bet the pistons are alright. I have a motor sitting on the shelf which was a 98 and it lost the timing belt. there was 0 damage to the pistons but the valves were mushed.
Broken TB on SOHC means piston hits valves, doesn't it? So either your 98 is dohc or you just didn't see the damage on the piston.
i have some Single port heads... Phase II tho, it would depend on when exactly the car is from. my 98 is all sorts of odd.
You can search local j/y via car-part.com There a couple of options for ~$100. Local you-pull style (upullrparts.com) has some older legacies, their heads would be somewhat different (pre 97 had hydraulic lash adjusters), they would fit, but I'd swap both sides then.
yea, pistons would hit valves. that would happen on a DOHC engine too. BUT, the pistons are about a hundred times stronger than the valves. I highly doubt the valve could do more than scuff/scratch the top of the piston. upull wants $28 + $5 core for a cylinder head. but they don't have anything new enough to help you. newest is a '96 Legacy. 2.2 heads are not created equal....many changes were made from time to time. But, just because you had some piston vs. valve contact doesn't mean the entire head is shot. I'd pull it, and take it to a machine shop. they'll be able to go over it and replace the valve and seat. and make sure all surfaces are flat and straight, etc. heck, while you're at it, might as well do both sides. get everything sealed up and get that motor runnin like new again.
Are the phase II 2.2 heads interference? Phase I 2.2 heads are not. Where is the cutoff between Phase I and Phase II. If the piston did hit the valve there could be a decent gouge in the piston, but in an NA motor not pushing the limits it shouldn't be an issue. I have two passenger side Tleg heads laying around, but they are in pretty rough shape, and are slightly different than NA heads, aside from the oil/coolant feed.
