Be wary of any motor that has sat for a significant amount of time. 22T's and 20G's are a solid design, but are still prone to rod bearing failures like all the rest. Ask Grayguy about that one. A basic refeshing can be done for very reasonable money depending on/if the damage present.
car-part.com has a couple of those between 300 to 800, so depending on condition somewhere between those is fine, less is better, obviously, since it seems EJ20g could be occasionally found for about 700-800. No place/time/cash to build anything at the moment.
he speaks the truth... I have a 22t bare block that's technically a spare atm, but I'd have to get a pretty good offer for it.
Don't think basic refreshing is a good choice, given that I will be paying for it, and the set of problems basic diagnosis revealed: -loud knocking from the back of the engine- -somewhat slow to build-up oil pressure, and lowish once running. -low compression on #1 and #3 -some silver crap in oil.
Yup, she could use some TLC. Its not unfeasable, but if you would be paying someone to do it, that kind of thing gets spendy real quick.
Generally, really bad knocking will require a crankshaft, or machining of said crankshaft, a rod to replace the one that is damaged, and depending on what the bores look like, an overbore and aftermarket pistons. The price of fun just went up...
^Yup Yup I couldnt imagine there being too many 22t's/20g blocks around that wont need work. But gud luck with the search, I hope something comes up for ya!
WRX swap? Think of the possibilities. Someone had a ej205 long block on here. Or at least dream a bit and move on.
Hey now, don't give up so easily. You could find a lower milage imported EJ20G, or download the service manual and take a crack at it.
I'm not a fan of wiresplicing, and even less of a fan of paying for that. EJ20g swap at least minimizes that.
Hey! Just remembered, I have 22t rods/pistons. Just taken out of the block yesterday. Alittle scoring/detonation pits on the pistons, but the rods appear to be fine for re-use. I give them to you.....
Yes, Curly2k3 has a EJ20g block for sale. Run it NA for the time being, then boost away when you get more moneys.
Are you refering to this thread? It seems to say that the block is sold, and its a shortblock anyway...
he sold it. but somedude on cragislit is selling it if you are interested; http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/pts/1016993630.html
I will be rebuilding my EJ22T with STi rods/WRX crank/machined for #5 thrust bearing/JDM 12mm oil pump. You can make it nice and fresh again I have thrown a rod bearing as well. Std bearings on 170k mile crank is no good. lols
ya, its curlys. I just spoke with chris, he said he let it go for dirt cheap. so ya, i dont know. you should just put a 257 in yours.
+1 to this. I have a set of EJ22T block halves sitting on the shelf, which I could be persuaded to part with. The block came out of Mike's (LegacyPGT) old rally car after it ate the tree. Block is in good shape still.
The block could be fine, but there is no way to tell until a complete teardown ensues. With the info at hand, a rebuild seems to not be an option.
Block halves and such will come in play, if I okay my mechanic for a teardown, right now I'm just hoping to find something complete to swap. But thanks letting me know
^Truf. The thing is, my impact (800 lb*ft) still can't get the head bolts or major block bolts. They are too long and soak up way too much energy. Thus, a breaker bar and pipe follow.
You mean like this? ...and that still required a considerable amount of effort to break the head bolts loose on my 22t (the 1st one)...
I got the head bolts of of Jason's EJ22T with a 14mm Ratchet wrench and a 4lb hammer, breaker bar needed ;-)
