I am thinking about replacing my steering rack the rattling is driving me crazy. I would prefer an sti one or an 06up wrx. And does anyone know how much it would be for labor to install it. Thanks, Taras
STI is not gonna be direct bolt up... You'll need extra brackets and hoses and such. 04 is different from 05-07. And no idea about Legacys
its hard to explain. there is a rattle in the front of the car in the middle of the front. Its there when i go over the bumps while turning. And i can hear something clicking very loudly when the car is standing still with the engine off and i am turning the wheel side to side. The rattle is not very loud but i can feel it in my feet and sometimes in the steering wheel.
Ball joints can cause that noise. If your tie rods aren't loose, I wouldn't buy a new rack. They are VERY expensive.
Extra brackets? The things I read said it'll bolt right up. The 05+ needs the sub-frame from and 05+. Taras, why don't you just replace the steering rack bushings? They wear out anyways. Maybe that's where your clunk is coming from. Plus if you get an 04 rack, you can still use them.
I had one of the tie rods replaced. What are the ball joints? The rack itself is not so bad its like 300 bucks but i think the install would cost a lot.
I had the rattle and the clicking noise for months and i am pretty sure its coming from the rack. I posted the tread so i can save and get a lightly use one.
Steps to diagnosing a problem with your car. 1) Get in car 2) drive to Morries 3) check car in 4) sit in waiting room 5) have a certified mechanic inspect it 6) pay cashier (if applicable) 7) drive home
well I got to start with something. Everytime else was check out by Nathan a few month ago and that was the only thing that was making the noise.
we htought the inner tie rod had a little play.. kinda deceiving but it wasnt the issue awhile ago.. still made the noise.. but I personally never thought it was anything to worry about.. I guess Taras just want's to replace everything he can on his car... probably figures he would have had to if he had of bought the WMC car in the first place...
lol, pretty much. However,if you remember the noise that the car made it got worse now. I am thinking could the noise be coming from axles? I know that the clicking noise comes from the rack but the rattle when going over the bumps might be something else. I just noticed tonight that there is a play in the steering wheel when i turn it side to side a little, there is no lag between turning the wheel and the wheels turning but there is a click after like a 2" of turning the steering wheel.
Hey Taras I am having this exact same problem. I know it is not my rack, its not the sways, its not the suspension so im probably going to try ball joints
Dude, we should meet up and see if the same problem. I was reading on nasioc some really old threads from like early 03 and the guys were talking about some kind of a rattle in the front and. I really want to get down to the problem. It really feels like the car is not solid over the bumps when turning. I drove in Lees 03 (i think) over the same bumps and his car feels really solid over them.
I feel the same way i dont really want to push the car too much or drive it for that matter. But im gettin a price on ball joints to fix it. I will have the car at firestone on friday 4 sure
I will swing by there on friday and we see how it feels. I might bring it to a dealership to have them look at it. I am really thinking i my case its steering rack, but i could be wrong.
I would highly doubt its the steering rack. All i did to my car was lower it 2+ inches and then it started to make the noise
yeah i did not do much to it and the noise was getting louder and louder. Now its loud and the feel when turning over bumps is just terrible.
I gave the car a decent shakedown and if I remember i didnt feel or see any movement.. but if it's gotten worse then maybe it could be...
yeah I did get a little worse. The cliking noise is much worse now and the rattle over bupms is kinda bad too. Its really bad if I am braking while turning and going over bumps. Does not happen when I go over bumps steright on.
