My mom is buying my dad a console for christmas, and doesn't know what to get him.

For starters, my dad isn't the kind of guy to play a Wii. We had one at my house and he refused to play it, and he also has a NICE television on which to play games, so having gamecube graphics would be a waste.

That said, what would you do? The Xbox 360 is prone to problems, the non-elite system doesn't come with an HDMI cable, and the extra $60 Best Buy warranty is necessary to prevent having to wait on Microsoft's crappy tech support when the xbox turns on the red ring of death. The HD DVD player is also an additional $170. BUT, the xbox has Halo, which my dad probably won't play anyway, and it has Xbox live, which won't be used due to my dad living in an area where broadband is unavailable. Already this sounds like I don't think highly of the Xbox, but I have played one (an elite) and it was pretty fun....I'm just an indecisive idiot looking for input.

The playstation 3 already plays blu-ray out of the box, it comes with HDMI output cables, and it isn't necessary to spend the extra money on a warranty, as the track record for these isn't horrendous like the Xbox. The downside would be that there is no cool xbox live network for content etc, no backwards compatibility to PS2 games (he doesn't have any though) and not all games available (try very few) for the Xbox are available for the PS3.

I've owned both a PS2 and a regular (now modded) Xbox and have enjoyed them both, so I'm not really sure what to do...hence this thread. I realize I could be putting this out on actual gaming forums, but I've already read the reviews of fanboy douches ad nasuem and wanted to hear from real people.

Any constructive feedback would be appreciated.

(to be specific, this is between the $350 20GB XBOX360, and the $399 40GB PS3)

I would vote for the 360 for game selection, PS3 for horsepower. And don't think that the PS3 won't have its share of problems. They also had some issues with power supplies early on. It's no RROD, but if the PS2 was an indication of build quality I wouldn't hold my breath.

PS3 - you don't have to "Pay to Play" +100
    XBOX - it's Microsoft -1000

    added:
IIRC the PS3 80 gig systems have backwards comp.

I know for a fact the 40gig systems don't..I have one.

Not true. It does play PS2 games.

I vote PS3 due to the out-of-the box performance. Plus, you can get an adapter to read the old PS memory cards.

Yeah I have had the 20 gig 360 and the 60 gig ps3 and I like them both but, I say ps3 fo' sho! You also don't have to pay for the ps network unlike xbox live. And like Bielke55 said "gt". And metal gear comes out soon too. http://www.gametrailers.com/player/22703.html

How sure are you about that? The other versions of the PS3 had either a hardware or software emulation to play PS2, and supposedly this version (the $399) doesn't have either.

Sorry but I had a PS3 80gb for three months, got sick of the lack of games and sold it. It did have a great picture with Motor Storm, but waiting for more games and GT3 was not worth the time and price. Back to the 360 for me.

the only reason i would buy a 360 would be for halo 3 which wasnt that good.

PS3 = GT5, Final Fantasy ect.... lotsa new games coming out.

The "cheap" PS3 did remove the backwards compatibility after the price adjustments. It was a pretty big "to do" in the gaming community. It was a software change to the system to prohibit the owners to play PS2 games.

    Sessler's Soapbox covers it slightly.

I want an Xbox for the games, but by the time you buy all the parts.... Ugh.

The PS2 is nice for the Blu-ray and out of the box power, but doesn't have the games I want.

I will play the games i want on the PC and we'll probably eventually endup with a Wii for my wife and son.

I guess I don't really see what the big deal is about backwards compatability. Unless you own a bunch of ps2 games that you still like to play. (in which case you prob. still own a ps2 anyway!) That's like asking me If I would rather have my 08' Lgt or my dad's 95' Camry. Out with old in with the new!

forza owns gt anyday and everyday... 360 ftw on gaming and gameplay
and like vector said.. they dont have games that u want.. 360 has a bit more 9/10 or better games iirc... blu ray is nice but its not used to its capacity yet and wont be for a few months if not a year.. almost same with hd dvd but it doesnt come built in so thats fine.. xbox live is 10 times better quilty then ps3 online since its funded better.. any more reasons ps3 is better?
all in all go for ps3 if u want a big impressive system.. go for 360 if u love to game.. both have same power capabilities at the time..

    my $.02

their first model 360's had a serious issue with gap pad materials, the goop between chips and heatsinks... they knew it was bad... Microsoft was nice enough to give you a refurbished one if you have hardware failure(red ring). You sign up on their site, they mail you a box to ship the busted one in, and with no cost to me what so ever i get a newer working one in about 2 weeks (3day to get box, 3day shipping of my box, 3day of the new box to my place).

SONY, on the other hand, forces you to ship the system to one of their facilities. They determine than if it's covered by their crappy warranty, and charge you a lot to get it fixed, than ship the SAME one back just cleaned out(I ship 3day, wait a week to hear anything, get a call saying it's not covered for some stupid reason about 'dust', than they ship the same one just cleaned a few days later usps super-slow.. was about a month before i got a semi-working one back that died again in half a year).

don't know what you're talking about Microsoft's 'crappy' tech support but if they are crappy.. sony must be the bottom of the barrel!

At this time, both systems have their kinks smoothed out and both are safe to play.. if you're worried about one of'm breaking on you I say stick with the 360, cheaper, nicer, and they are easy to get a hold of.

In terms of tech support I was going off of what I had read from multiple sites...but not first hand experience. (I don't own either.)

The accessories cost for the 360 is a bit steep, or am I not adding correctly?
