I bought myself the 06/07 roof vane. I got everything I think I need. the only problem is that I don't know exactly where to mount the son of a gun. I know it goes on the roof so don't be dumb. but i was wondering if someone could maybe help me out and measure out distance from so certain point on the car to the bolt or even better i could come see the car and measure it out and get a general idea of what im getting into. if someone has done this before tips would be great. Your help is much appreciated.
This should give you all the infoz you need. http://www.i-club.com/forums/how-tos-installations-192/oem-sti-roof-vane-install-216877/
Thanks for the link but i still have one problem. I need a 06/07 to look at and measure so it can be done right. I don't want to bring it into a body shop or somebody that has body work experience and just guess at where it would go.
Huh...i have one too that i'm about to mount on my WRXTi. I'm not going too be as scientific as you tho...i'm just going to mount it.
well im not trying to be scientific but i want it to look right. I dont want it to look all haphazard.
I plan on "eyeballing" mine. If you hold it up there it only really fits right in one spot...just got to get it even left to right.
I borrowed a 06 STi for the day when I installed my roof vane on my bugeye. We measured up from the "trunk" area. Take your time and measure it a couple times to make sure you do it right. Make sure to plan a good amount of time to do the install. Like they said in the link you MUST have good drill bits. If you don't have some go buy them. When drilling thru the second layer you will hate yourself if you have crapy ones. I though we had good ones until we did this. I have heard some people will take very small punch and hit it extremely hard and this will get you through the second layer by punching through it. For the 3rd layer I took a hole saw and made a 2 inch hole in that so when i put my bolts into the body to secure the wing they were contacting the thicker layer instead of the thinner interior metal( **FYI**I had to custom make some angled spacers to do this). If you have any further questions, let me know.
Got a couple questions. do you have the distance from the trunk to the wink. What did these custom spaces look like and would you be willing to make some for me. Im just looking to get this done the right way. i don't want to see rust or anything of that sorts start to happen. I personally don't feel confident drilling into my own car. This is one of those ones that im going to have a body shop have done. I just want to get all the specs and the hardware correct for them. I have the hardware (bolts look wimpy) minus angled spacers if you are so kind so I just need the specs and maybe some advice for the body man/woman.
It also seems that Minnesota never received any 06 or 07 sti. looks like we got the bugeyes and the blobeyes. Said screw you to the hawkeyes and made up to the whale mouths. Where are my hawk eyed STis? I know you are out there. I need your help!
I would have to have a car, wing, and all that here to re make the spacers. The spacers started out as well a generic spacer. I then grinded/cut away at the spacer to get the angle correct. Bolt and washer sat flush on one side, the other side of the spacer mounted up smoothly to the "2nd layer" of the body. I doubled everything up with epoxy as a second layer of sealing to revent water ect from ever leaking.
If you are picky, and want it done 100% right on something like this I would not trust your average body shop. I did mine 3 years ago, I can't remember the specifics. Also, if your gunna pay someone to do it. I would take all your interior out ahead of time and save some $$.

Its all good now. I found a body man that got it all done for a really good price and did a great job. looks like it belongs on the car. I'll upload pictures at a later time but if anyone is interested in getting one I can point you in the right direction.
I got the roof vane for a steal. 100.00 for the vein. then I got all the mounting hardware and gaskets from the dealership for like $5. the labor was done at around $105. he also painted them but those where just as much buying them brand new off the internet for $80. pretty reasonable if you ask me.
