Are the 2007 STi's really that much faster because of the gear ratio?

in a straight line yes. You cant hit trap speed in 4th gear on a pre 07 STi.

I don't really keep up with 1/4 mile stuff.. not my thing. What are 07's trapping compared to similar 06's?

From what I've read the revised heads seem to be helping a lot in the power making department.

....and the funny part is that these "revised" heads are the same ones on the '06-07 WRX. :p

It's fun pissing off some of the holier than thou 04-06 STi owners on nasioc when you tell them your engine is better than theirs. :p

07 trap speed is ~115 mph in 4th gear. 06 is ~108 in 5th gear

Personally, i like having the shorter gears for driving on twisty roads, i if i guess well going into a corner i never find myself low on the power band or running out of legs on the acceleration out.

my ecu isn't all fubared up and laggy and choppy :)

we all know the new ugly ones are gonna out power all of us anyways out of the box.

had we had the short 5th/6th gear and 8k revvs...we'd hit the 1320 in 4th no problem.

On the JDM STi 6spd, 4th goes to about 117mph at redline.

hmmm, can our engines handle 8k redline with a reflash? heck even 7.5k to get us to 110 would be nice.

I wouldnt reccomend doing that at all. Your motor is a short stroke big bore, it's not a Honda man

Actually, the STI is a longer stroke, which makes higher revs an issue.

Revving to 8k isn't something I'd recommend on an EJ257. And if your turbo can't make power up there, why rev that high?

    compared to what? lol

bottom line is, the stock motor/heads arent designed to rev like that, so dont do it :)

Because everyone wants a hondaru, high rev = more power

swap in jdm sti engine if you want 8k rev

boo. I have my shift light set at 6700 which just gives me enough time react to shift before i hit redline, except in 1st and 2nd...

off topic: where do you guys set yours?

Compared to every other turbo Subaru engine on the planet. The JDM STi motor revs to 8k. It uses a shorter stroke and bore. The EJ22T uses the same stroke with a larger bore. The WRX uses the same stroke. The STi uses a longer stroke than any of those motors.
Could an STi motor rev to 8k? Possibly with the right oiling, and balanced bottom end.

Also, almost all high revving motors have a shorter stroke. Lower piston speeds at higher revs is a good thing.
