what are the differences between this trans and the 2.2l impreza trans?

it seemed like the gear ratios were wayy different because with my old 5 speed legacy I would cruise at 65mph @ 2500 rpm, with the impreza trans in my turbo legacy it was 3100 at 65mph.
wouldent this make the trans stronger because of the ratios?
anyways, gimme the lowdown down low on how much its going to cost to rebuild my 1.8l trans and is there any kind of coating or anything out there to make my gears stronger? I will be running DOHC, cams and bigger turbo on this setup, rather than stock boost with a downpipe, so I want to look into a stronger trans for sure, or at least a fresh one.

get a wrx tranny and dont drop the clutch. hell you could probably get one for 800-100 for the full package. you'd need to switch over to hydrolic clutch but everything else should bolt right up(tranny, linkage)

yeah I was thinking of going this route, but I am trying to avoid doing the hydro clutch, but im starting to think its the best way...

im sure someone here has had to get 2nd replaced, how much did it cost for parts?

I guess im just interested in doing a rebuild, or pricing one in comparison to doing a used wrx trans.
but if I do a wrx trans I would also have to fool around with alot of hydro parts and alot of ghetto rigging lol.
I have actually read about doing the hydraulic swap and its not too hard, but I am trying to avoid it at all costs.

i actually kinda wish you could ghetto rip a wrx tranny/clutch to run on a cable. i perfer cable because you can feel it more.

I would like to look into that also, I love the feel for the cable.
is the trans physically different or......
maybe you just have to cut a hole for the clutch fork to slip through? i have no idea what the difference is, but I dont see a reason why a cable clutch wouldnt work...... someone tell me why?

So you have Legacy Turbo vehicle?? That means that it's a pull style. SO I assume you've converted over the clutch system and slave cylinder etc....

The Legacy Turbo runs a 3.900FD. The Impreza and NA Legacy's run the same 4.111 in the 5spd. The 5spd from the Turbo Legacy runs VERY SIMILAR gear ratios to the USDM WRX '02-'07. I believed that the Legacy Turbo ran the SAME ratios as the WRX except a shorter 1st gear.

My L already had the holes for the clutch master. Others don't however, and I'm not sure why.

I used to rock the cable. The feel is nice, but I've been using an older legacy SS clutch master without any kind of dampening valve and its not bad. The trouble with a cable type is your clutch options are pretty limited.

The hydro pedal assembly goes in pretty easy. Just loosen the two bolts holding the steering column up and you have room. IIRC

I don't think cable trannys have the mounting spot for a slave cylinder, but I don't know for sure.

Do you have the hole for the clutch master? It has a diamond shaped rubber cover on it.

Its down and to the left of the brake master cyl. Inbetween the brake master and the ignitor.

ditch them all. Save for 6spd!
Really the Impreza/Legacy/Forester trannies only hold so long. Run them but only as something to get around. I've broken my 2.5RS 5spd with my Legacy Turbo swap. Now 2nd gear is gone with my '93 Legacy 5spd AWD and 4th gear pops out. I'm only using 1st, 3rd, and 5th along with reverse. The teeth in the tranny clunks around. The Knock sensor pick this up and thinks the engine is knocking so it retards timing. NO POWER.

I would say get a newer 5spd tranny and have STi RA gears put in. You'll be happy! Depends on your power levels. I'm going for my JDM STi 6spd. No regrets!!

    hmmm very intersting...

what does a good wrx trans go for these days?

I think this may need to happen, judging by how easy the auto to manual swap was as far as custom fabrication goes (zero needed) I think I may look into finding a rex trans and whatnot.
could I use a turbo legacy clutch master cyl?

An absolute waste of money. $1300-1500 for an RA gearset plus install? I think not. Plus the gears are the same width as what, 04+?

after doing some reading on nasioc, they all reccomend doing a 07 6 speed vs the ppg gearset, saving 1000 to 1500 dollars.

    can you verify this dan?

my plan is to get it the car up and running with the 1.8 trans rebuilt and some other things then start saving my money for a 6spd. after all, if I ever scoop up a rex I can toss just take out the 5 speed sell it and put the 6 speed setup in....

Ya it was really easy actually. The mechanical drive screws right in where the electric sensor is on the tranny. Piece of cake.

Well if you need a t-leg pull hydro clutch primary and secondary slave cylinders, i have an extra set.

Same ratios on the speedo gear huh? Nice

Ahhh, heh, not exactly. I'd say it reads 5mph fast across the board. Not the end of the world. Its weird that the difference isn't a linear increase, like 2mph at 30 and 4mph at 60.:dunno:
