I do not know as much as some do on here, but I would say if you are looking at an STI, I would shoot for an 09 vs 08. I had tons of trouble with my 08 WRX, and heard they fix most of them with the 2009, I would assume it was the same for the STI. I would go 11 WRX though.

I'm pretty much in the same boat... 09+ sti / 11+ WRX. Been chatting w/ KA-T_240 about his 2012, but it's tough to find the time to drive from Minneapolis to Moorhead just to look at a car :/

08-13 STi's are mechanically the same darn thing, except in 11+ they stiffened up the spring rates and lowered it a hair. I also believe that 11 (maybe even 2010) was the first year that they offered the limited package for the STi with a sunroof, bluetooth, heated seats, etc.
And I forgot to mention that the 11+ has different front control arms and you can also disable the hill start assist in 09+. This thread grew pretty well, but I bought a 2010 OBP WRX sedan. No major mod plans, just the simple stuff, flaps, tint, and maybe some exhaust.
