150mph?

Two motorcyclists led authorities on a high-speed chase Tuesday night through parts of four counties, topping out at 150 miles per hour before they were arrested.

The two men appeared to be part of a group of 15 motorcyclists who first fled Bloomington police traveling east on Interstate Hwy. 494 about 11 p.m.

Adam R. Blomquist, 27, was arrested in Woodbury. Christian D. Laddusaw, 29, a volunteer reserve officer with the Minnetrista Police Department, was arrested in Oak Park Heights 30 minutes after the pursuit began.

Records show that Blomquist has been ticketed multiple times for speeding between 1999 and 2002. He also has been convicted of multiple counts of drunken driving. Laddusaw has been ticketed at least six times between 1997 and 2001 for speeding.

Bloomington police said an officer first saw the 15 motorcyclists traveling 75 mph in a 60-mph zone. She tried to stop them. One slowed down and pulled onto the shoulder, then took off. The others sped away, some reaching speeds of up to 130 mph, police said.

"[The officer] decided it wasn't worthwhile to pursue them any more because it was too dangerous," said Kevin Herman, a Bloomington police commander.

But two state troopers who heard the officer's call for assistance were waiting at I-494 and Hwy. 52. That's where authorities saw Blomquist and Laddusaw whizzing by, both on 750cc motorcycles.

"It's crazy behavior," said Kevin Smith, a spokesman for the Minnesota Department of Public Safety. "It's absolutely dangerous for everyone. One false move on a motorcycle at those speeds turns it into a lethal weapon."

Bloomington police say that the motorcyclists were switching lanes to avoid traffic; Smith said traffic was sparse as the pursuit continued.

Blomquist tried to evade troopers by turning off his lights and ignition as he coasted up the Lake Road exit ramp, Smith said. He was apprehended after a brief attempt to flee.

Laddusaw sped up I-494, where authorities said he was clocked at 150 mph. The pursuit continued on Hwy. 5 and then onto residential streets, Smith said.

Laddusaw was arrested without incident after he pulled into the Oak Park Heights City Hall parking lot in Washington County, having fled authorities through part of Hennepin, across Dakota and through a corner of Ramsey counties.

A colleague at the Minnetrista Police Department, where Laddusaw has served as a volunteer reserve officer, said he was shocked by the arrest.

"He's an outstanding reserve officer," said Minnetrista Sgt. Paul Halls. "This is very out of character."

Laddusaw has been suspended pending an investigation, Halls said.

"We need to get these people off the roads," said Smith of the Public Safety department. "It seems to be a game to these guys ... where they almost want to be chased, believing they can get away."

Blomquist and Laddusaw were being held without bail Wednesday afternoon in the Washington County jail. Charges are pending.
