I have a buddy looking at getting one of these...he loves them both, doesn't care about 2 doors or 4...all he cares about is up-keep and maintaining it, NOT modifying it at all...He likes the quattro system but kinda prefers the RWD of the M3...from what you guys know about these cars...what would be the safer bet for him? he wants one with 45-60k miles ...and NO i tried talking him into an sti...didn't work
if he has money either one would suit him, i personally would go for the bmw, because i utterly hate audi/vw
Yup. They had piston speeds that were nearing the velocity of f1 cars. Long stroke + 8k redline = yikes! At some point, BMW figured out how to make the engine much more reliable.
VW tranny's feel like garbage to me, atleast the '03 a4 1.8t and the '04 alltrac (6-speed) that i drove felt like shifting garbage.
I think it was the first and maybe the early part of the 2nd year of the current e46 body style. 2000-01 perhaps? I'm not sure on the years.
M3. Used Audi's tend to have worse electrical problems than new ones, and the new ones have horrible electrical problems.
I'm going to buck the trend and say 04+ S4. The 4.2L V8 is phenomenal and when coupled with the Quattro is a completely confident. Sure the M3 is RWD and tossable but you've got more torque, more cylinders, and more power to more wheels in the S4. BTW: I own a RWD BMW and an AWD Audi. If I combined the two I'd have an RS6 and a permanent erection.
Yeah, you may have more power but you also have an extra 400 lbs of lard. The S4 is no longer the sport sedan that it used to be.
Found this on CanadianDriver.com: Audi: 3825 lbs (6-spd ones) BMW: 3481 lbs (6-spd ones) That's a > 10% weight difference. Pretty significant.
The '08 M3 is still the lightweight in its class. Check it: http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests...mance_car_comparison/audi_rs4_conclusion.html When will we get a new M3 CSL???
