We ended up with two Nine-pointers, a six and a button. Here's my Nine that I got opening morning: And the MASSIVE non-typical nine that my buddy is getting mounted. It tipped a 200lb scale, so we estimated at ~210lbs
Saw a handful of small does, nothing worthy of shooting on opening weekend. Guy in our party got a decent sized doe with his .44 Magnum.
Nope. Was just one hell of a good shot. Running at about 40 yards, first shot he hit it in the knee and just about took her leg off, second shot was in the neck and she dropped like a pile of shish. haha Only thing really holding her leg on was the skin
Shot it with my camera. He was cruising the back yard sunday night. And no, he is not always out there. Actually this is only the second buck I have seen in the back yard so far this fall. Russ
Well, my opener started pretty bad. Walked out to my stand only to find out it had been blown over, im guessing from the bad storm we had up here a couple weeks ago. Pulled both front ancor's right out of the ground! So I grabbed my chair and sat on the ground in front of my stand. I saw 3 does, and two bucks. All of which i only saw for a few seconds because I was too low! One of the bucks had a very nice spread, and around a 6-8 point. Needless to say, the stand is getting some pretty massive ancor's now.
Downed a 4 pointer Saturday morning at 7:15! nothing really to brag about. Shot it with a 3030. Funny thing was. It came limping toward me with a shattered leg and a bullet through his ass. I finished him off, tagged it up and the guys that missed him tried convincing me to let them have it. NOT SO MUCH!
Anyone shot a 30 odd 6 at a deer? Is the exit wound pretty nasty? I am thinking of sitching from a 30 30 although I hear you can lose allot of meat near the exit wound.
really depends on where you hit it. I use a .270 which is the same casing as a 30-06 but obviously smaller bullet. I've never had a "large" exit hole. Totally ruined some hearts and lungs. My uncles and grandpa all use 30-06 - good all around gun goes through most anything. if you don't hit shoulder or rear you'll be fine for meat - just go for lung/heart or head shot. I used a 30-30 my first few years and I think it maybe left a larger hole because it travels slower and expanded faster? only shot one or 2 deer with that about 15-20 years ago.
If you are a sportsman, first blood gets the deer. You sir are a jackass. It's a 30-06. (Pronounced Thirty-Aught-Six) Not a 30 odd 6.
2nd year shooting these guns and hunting all together. Sorry that I spelled and pronounced it wrong. Anything else you would like to be a dick about today? Dont mean to offend anyone, but is that really how you talk to someone that you dont even know? PM me if you want to talk more about this. Don't want to start a flame war here among friends.
keep it clean and civil, boys. Strangefameous, Congrats on the deer, it's great to hear that you got one! What did you think of cleaning him out? Good times!!! If the guy that hit him in the leg and ass was tracking him, even if I would have put him onto the ground, I would have offered him to the other guy as that's what I would have wanted if the rolls were reversed. I'm not aware of any written rule stating that this is how things are done, but it's generally followed. I'm not coming down on you for it, heck, I don't care, but although goodheart could have come across quite a bit better, he does have a point.
uh oh.. all we need are hunters all butt hurt over things now... I see it both ways.. if they hit it and and got away then they miss out... you got the kill... although if you came across one hit by a car and pulled out a pistol and shot it dead.. would you claim it or let the guy with a ruined car take it ??? hahahahah jk with ya...
It depends on the bullet in the shells you use. A Core locked bullet or anything with the core brazed to the jacket will hold together and expand slower than a standard bullet, or something like my ballistic silvertips. Some people want a slower expanding bullet so they can hit a deer in the shoulder and still have an exit wound for trailing. I prefer to hit the neck at the base of the skull to conserve meat myself. I can't always take that shot though. On the deer I shot Sunday morning, I had to shoot at the vitals and I hit him just behind the elbow. The bullet fragmented into three pieces with an exit directly across, a large exit that blew the other leg bone apart, and a small wound in front of the hind quarter. I had a deer in the past that took the bullet directly in the chest, and I found her with her small intestines laying next to her. That's a rather large exit wound. I shoot Winchester Supreme 168 grain Ballistic Silvertip's.
Shot at 6:50 Sunday morning. He was a 2 1/2 year old deer. Dressed between 140 and 150, most likely. Pretty small rack for that old of deer. What is interesting is this deer what about the same size. He dressed at 142 which which is in line for a 2.5 year old deer in that area.
You're missing the Springfield part. J/K, I'm a dork, lol. Personally, if I would have seen the wound or limp before, I would have finished him off and waited to see if there was an owner. Being a fairly new hunter, I can understand your situation. I won't say you're a jackass, but 15 years of deer hunting would make me treat the situation differently. That might be due to several people I know who've been on the other side of the situation. **** happens on public land though. That's all I can say. Some d-bag tried to tell me to get out of "their" area on public land on Sunday. Little does he understand that deer do not travel a lot at noon on a 62 degree day when bucks aren't acing like they are in rut, and I'm probably doing people a favor by moving deer around.. I could have said eff off, but it wasn't worth it.
That is how I talk, sorry. I don't post anything I wouldn't tell someone to their face, ask anyone here that knows me. It is kind of an un-written rule in hunting that the first blood gets the deer. Think of it this way, He potentially had been watching that deer for weeks, waited for the shot on opening morning, and took the shot and tracked the deer. While he was tracking it, you saw a hobbling bloody mess of a deer limping through the woods and you finish him off. He gets there and you tag him. How would that make him feel? Put yourself in his shoes. Again, un-written rule. Some people (see: yuppies) are idiots like that. They sit in a stand for 12 hours expecting a deer to just come wandering by them at 1 in the afternoon, LOL. They don't seem to understand that the deer don't really moved unless pushed in the late morning/afternoon hours in most areas, and that driving for them is the best thing to do. The same type of people that don't seem to understand that deer don't move out in the open on very windy days, bad weather, and don't seem to pay attention to the direction of the wind while either sitting or driving through the woods.
Saw 2 does and a small buck on opener and haven't seen anything since. Pretty dumb cause i live way out in the sticks. Russ you got some cool shots there!!
