hey all, just seeing what all of you are running for 20g setups, preferably on an sti or and other 2.5 and what your supporting mods are? i'm going to be going with a 20g soon and just seeing what you guys have. dyno numbers also? thanks!
gah. come on guys, you dont have to pout the biggest turbo possible on the car and the 35 r is more expensive, requires ancillary mods that a 20G wouldn't (EWG/rotated setup/smart to put in forged pistons) I think pete's 20G i fine, I think an FP green would be fine, I think a TD05 20G has its merits too. Helix rr500 (also a 20G) looks like a really nice turbo. Sure a rotated 35R is nice, but too laggy for a lot of people, very expensive and it may be more top end than he's looking for with a less driveable power curve. AFAIK nobody here daily drives a 35r . Some of us (me) would rather give up a bit of top end power i'll never use to get spool i'll use all the time. He was asking about 20g setups, I can maybe assume he isn't interested in something rotated/ewg and $4000... so more on topic I think the Helix rr500 is probably the best new 20g based turbo as its pretty affordable and putting up some decent numbers. If I were in the market for a turbo i'd be looking there, or FP green or TD05 20g. The TD05 20g will put down lower top end numbers on race gas than a TD06 20g but the does indeed spool better, so it depends on what you're after. If you want to tell people a big dyno number or be a top dog drag racer than a 35R is a nice turbo. If you want a more street driveable easier to drive better looking powerband car, get a 20G.
I think the gears are kind of short for a 20G on a STi. I wouldnt do it if I had to do it all over again, go 30R or 35R, you wont regret it. Rides start at 5 bucks a pop
I like my 20g setup but I'm also thinking about going 30R next year. I am focusing this year on getting my block where I want it to be. I'm leaning more towards the 30R though for lag reasons. I want a stoplite car, not a freeway car.
i'm not quite sure what i want to do yet. I am going to be building my head soon with cams, valves, springs, retainers, having it redecked and ported, and tgv deletes. I just want something that is going to give a little more powa for now. I am eventually going to be getting a gt30r but i'm not going to do that until i do pistons. For the 20g setup i was thinking of going with a front mount. maybe running alky? just something thats gunna have fun with autoxing. i'm going to be doing a few "cold" session road races and try to get a feel for everything and i dont want a turbo that i'm not going to be able to control. I want to start slow and get much more familiar with the car and how it handles and how to drive it before i go for too much power. I want to get off on the right foot and build things up before i push too much power out of the car.
? why would i get something like a 30r or 35r that is better gauged for top end since you never see highspeeds in autox anyways.
actually it was, the best setup for autoX would be somthing smaller then a 20G, a stock turbo would probably be best, and if you wanna argue about it we can, just not in this thread.
yah to put all that $$ in your car with doing a turbo upgrade you are better off stepping up to a 35r. but if you want it for autox then i would stick to suspention and tires. a 20g is a hart braker. you get use to the power in a week. then you want more, and more, and more ect.
 i daily drive a top mount 35r with the smaller exhaust housing. i gave up a little top end in relation to erik's setup, but it spools up ungodly fast.... for me, the 20g was nice and smooth, but really lacked the warp drive engagement factor.
yeah stock turbo is one of the better ones for autox, but top end power isnt really necessary vs spool time there. But a 20g can be a fun street car and be competent at autocrossing, 35r or bigger might have some problems down low. If you ever want to take it up to brainerd then the biggest turbo you got will be nice to have, but not totally neccesary It does come down to wherever you draw the line. like they said, no matter what you do, you'll get used to it and might want something bigger, i guess thats why there is such a big market in used turbos.
We will see about all this talk and put what ever to rest when my car is complete. A sbrtdo6h 20g in a gc body impreza with an sti block with a 4eat auto tranny. I bet i will give more people a run for there money than they expect cause my car will be light, its not all about big huge turbo's. now on the freeway i will lose but who races from 40 to 140, a real race is from a dig.
