ok i got to get some summer rubber for the rims, but was wondering if there is an actual difference/benefit with a 235 over a 225 series tire.

    Wider is better.

235 refers to the width of the tire in mm. The 40 or 45 number is after it is the aspect ratio, so 40% of a 235mm tire is 94 which refers to the amount of sidewall.

However, a 235/40 tire will be slightly smaller in circumferance than a 225/45 tire and therefore take more revolutions per mile.

reverse that ;). the 225/40 will be smaller and have more revolutions.

here's a gear and tire calculator:
    http://www.subarubrat.com/Calc.htm

on the bottom is a tire diameter calculator. you can try different tire size combos to see what the direct effect it'll have on the OD of the tire.

Ah, check your math again. I just used your calculator and proved my point: 235/40 = 24.4" diameter 225/45 = 24.97" diameter

a 225/40-17 WOULD be shorter, but that's not even near the stock tire size.
a 235/40-17 is only slightly smaller than stock, yeilding a little bit better acceleration.

but we wern't comparing 225/40-17 to 235/40-17, we were comparing 225/45
    you ran the wrong calculation.

If comparing between a 225 and a 235 of the same type of tire there will be a slight benifit in the wider tire. If comparing between different types of tires the difference goes out the window as it depends much more on what type of tire than the tiny amount of width you gain.

A 225 Falken RT-615 will grip much better than a 235 Yokohama AVS Sport. When compared side by side, the 225 Falken might actually be wider as well.

    Excellent point.
Width will not make up for a lack of quality.

ugh....my brain.....I didn't see that you said 225/45. I shouldn't even try technical threads when I'm sick
