So, had to drop the wife off at work this morning and take an alternate route in to work myself. Headed north on 35W from 36 and a sand bag (like the ones road crews use with signs) decided to meet my new car. The car seems okay other than the wheel is cracked. This is going to be a bit expensive. Thankfully insurance should pick up most of it, but it does mean driving on the spare for a while.
Is there any damage besides the wheel? I don't get it. Also, do you have a full-size spare or a donut?
I'll need a new rim and a new tire for sure. I've only got about 1200 miles on the tire so just the one should be just fine. I don't mind the stock rims and I already will be mounting winter tires on alternate rims so I can easily swap between summers/winters, so I don't think I'll replace the whole set just yet. They of course aren't a stocked part though, so it'll take a few days to get everything in once the inspection is completed. I guess I'll have to see what they charge for it compared to a whole set, but I can't imagine the single would be more expensive than a new set (haven't ever bought new rims before for any previous cars, so we'll see). It didn't look as if anything else was damaged, but I'll have it in a shop right away to inspect the suspension, brakes, etc. for other damage. It has a donut spare. So, no full speed spirited driving until fixed. That sucks even more as I just completed the break-in oil change on Tuesday and was finally able to start having a little more fun.
Have your control arms and tie rods checked to be sure. Nonononononono. Speed is irrelevant, you do not want to run one wheel with a different outside diameter longer than absolutely necessary. This will cause damage to your differentials if you log a lot of miles on a donut. Do not drive it farther than you have to.
Exactly. All I meant was to take it easy and not take this car out this weekend for fun driving. I was planning on swapping the stock wheels onto winters, so maybe I'll just accelerate that plan depending on the inspection and timeline. I just wasn't planning on that cost now... We'll see.
I know it's not a funny situation, but it's at least a little humorous that the tire is stamped "RIM PROTECTOR" right frickin' there.
Do the companies that set up construction signs and barricades have their sand bags marked with their name like their other equipment is marked? I would think about making a claim with MNDoT.
Ouch that blows. If you need a new tire or want some spares, I'm selling my stock 235/45/17 Dunlops for cheap. That may help save you some cash.
I'm not prepared to purchase alt wheels yet. Come fall I will be looking to get winters and move them to stock wheels. I'll then be looking for alt wheels for summers.
NO DONT PUT NO "ROTAS" OR "XXR's" (KNOCK OF WHEEL JOKE) ON THAT CAR! THEY WILL BRAKE...wait the oe wheel broke hmmm How hard did you hit that thing? Did you get a chance to talk to any of the crew members not picking up after them selfs properly
