I've been meaning to get this arranged for a while, looks like this month is a good one, we'll go celebrate our 2nd Amendment rights ;)

    Date: Saturday, July 26th 2008
    Time: 9:00AM
Where: Bills Gun Shop in Robbinsdale (unless we decide on a different place)
Why: To blast evil paper targets (and have a lot of fun doing it)
Who's Invited: Anyone and everyone who's interested. Gun ownership not necessary.

We had a great turn out for the first meet and I know people had a lot of fun. The second meet got put together at the last minute, but I figured I'd give everyone more lead time this time around. Gun ownership isn't needed, we had plenty to go around last time and Bills also has rental guns that can be used. You will need to buy ammo at Bills if you're going to use their firearms however. First time shooters are more than welcome, we'll have enough people who can show you the ins and outs of using a firearm safely. We had a few first time shooters at the first meet who had ear to ear grins afterwards. For those of you who'd like to borrow someone elses gun, it's polite to bring some ammo and/or purchase some targets.

So, for those of you who are coming and bringing your own guns, please post up what you're bringing and if you're willing to let someone else use your guns as well.

I'll start, I will be bringing 3 guns (and possibly a 4th, depends on how the month plays out)

Remington 870 Police Magnum 12ga shotgun
    Kimber TLE II .45ACP pistol
    Kimber Rimfire Target .22LR Pistol

I am willing to share for ammo/targets :)

Unfortunately that is the same day as the the rally. I really want to get out to one of these. I guess I'll bring the "toys" up and get a few rounds fired on the parents land.

Crap. I forgot that the rally is that day. If we're losing too many people to that then perhaps we could go to the 19th instead?

Brian I am not a gun owner, but I have been interested in participating in your events. 19 & 20 will not work for me, I'll be at DCTC. Schedule it to what works for the group, I'll tag along at another time.

I'm going to stick with the 26th, I think. We'll be doing more of these so there will be more opportunities in the future. Come on out!

Crap. I thought they had an outdoor range. Oh well, it is double the distance for those who want to bring rifles and shoot a bit farther. However, it is a bit of a hike out there. We'll see how the poll goes.

Smoothbore cannon. I can post up random weapons as well. If you're wondering if you can shoot one there, I'd have to guess no as you're still within the lethal frag range. Not sure why you'd want to shoot something like that indoors.

It's a combination rifle/pistol range, they do everything in there from Pellet guns to .50BMG sniper rifle shoots so pretty much anything goes. Personally, I don't get why you'd want to shoot a .50 on a short range like that. The whole point of that round is to hit a target over a mile away like a Mack truck doing Mach 3. I'd at least want to be able to shoot a 1000 yard course with it, but there aren't many of those around.

Robbinsdale is 75 feet, CP is 150 feet. 75 feet for a pistol range is really about as far as you'd want to shoot. Most pistol engagements happen inside of 10, and the law enforcement standard for lethal force is 21 feet or less. My personal feeling is that if you're trying to shoot with a pistol much past 30-35 feet you should've brought a rifle (and better yet, a friend with a rifle. Jack will know what I'm talking about). Rifles are a different story, the whole point of those is reaching out and touching someone from a distance so a longer range is better. Shotguns slot neatly between pistols and rifles depending on the round, whether it's birdshot, buckshot or slugs to determine the effectiveness of the round(s) over distance.

It's in the OP. Yes, Bills does have guns that you can rent. 15.00 for the first, 10.00 for each additional gun. You will need to purchase ammunition there if you are going to shoot their guns.

I'll tag along next time, let me know how it goes and please bring some EVO, not S14 pictures for target practice. LOL

I'm bringing my 870 and my Kimber .22. The .45 is going to sit this one out. If you're picking up 12ga ammo just find the target birdshot loads, they've got the 100 rnd value packs for 20 bucks, and they do just fine on paper targets. No sense spending the extra money on buckshot. Oh, and smoothbore slugs can be fun too and they're usually around 4 bucks or so for a box of 5.

I'll be back october 21st-28th as I've mentioned before. I'd love to do a shoot.

I'm currently enrolled in MCMTU (marine corps marksmanship training unit) at the division schools here at 29 Palms MCAGCC. I'm spending 22 days straight learning to be a range coach and instructor, classes and shooting 12 hours a day. That requires qualifying expert on 6 ranges with the M16, and expert on 3 ranges with the M9. I'm 3 days in so far, and have no idea what I got myself into. Apparently my unit grabbed the three highest shooters and volun-told us for this program.

I'd love to get to the range with everyone and throw some lead down range when I'm back. My uncle is an apple valley cop, and I'm going to invite him to shoot. He has a small arsenal of hand guns, somewhere in the realm of 10-15? Anyways. Should be a good guy to bring. He has a lot of information about conceal and carries, situational awareness, threat reduction, and enough stories to entertain the masses.

If anyone has a replica M4/M16, AR15, etc, I might be able to put it to some very good use/toss some knowledge around.

Anyways, just throwing it out there that I am very interested. I guarantee I could find quite a few friends who'd be down as well.

Cool! do you know what day during that time would work out best for you to make it to a range day? A saturday/sunday morning would most likely work best for others.

Also congrats on being one of the 3 best shooters, perhaps with your instructor knowledge you can teach us all a thing or two about shooting. you should check out an M14 while you are at the range, I wanna hear your opinion on it.

bahahaha, an M14. The only place you'll find those on base is the museum. A big disadvantage of the M14 was the max effective range, at 460meters. The M16's max effective range is slightly over 800meters. Marksmanship training on our M16's include firing Iron sights on a silhouette target from 500meters. I know with an ACOG on, I could effectively engage targets in the 5-800meter range, I just am not sure the lethality of such a light round at that range. It definitely would stop forward progress of a target though. The M16 is much lighter than the M14, more durable, and you can fit more 5.56 rounds to a magazine than with 7.62.

The 7.62 is simply a .308 equivalent, a very formidable long distance round, which makes me curious about its application in the M14 and why the range is limited. My guess is barrel manufacture, and sight apertures.

I do wish the M16 was a 7.62 caliber, but if you've seen what a 5.56 ball round does, its pretty nasty. Its a tumbler, and has an "armor piercing" tip that assists in initial penetration before it separates. Essentially you get hit by a .177 piece of metal, which then causes the lead (about a .22 caliber) to enter, and tumble sideways. It makes a huge mess of things.

Fatal, very. Does it have the initial stopping power? no. Thats why we are trained to fire in pairs, or failure to stop drills.

Martin, I'm going to have to talk to my dad to check on when he's good to go on hunting. That is the entire reason I'm coming home, so I have to plan around him. As it is I know a lot about shooting, but the purpose of the class is to train you to be a coach. You hardly have to be able to shoot well to be a teacher, but it can be a big help.

We cant exactly check out whatever we want at the armory, even my own unit's armory has to have an okay from my command to release weapons to us. However, we currently have sort of a "take what you need" clause built into our paperwork.

I can give you my opinion on the M4, M16 (A2 and A4), SAW, 240G and 240B, the 203 grenade launcher (attachment for A4) and MK19.

My knowledge of demolitions I have to keep tight lips about.

Very interesting information. From what I had gathered the M14 had a greater effective range than the M16/M4. Although this could be a result of the type of ammunition used. I am not sure how M80 (7.62 ball) compares to a commercially loaded .308 Win hunting round. The shell casing is almost identical. All military brass is slightly thicker than commercial stuff because it is dual purpose for small arms and LMGs. I have heard that they used different measurements for powder loading though. I was also under the impression that the Marines had brought several of the old M14s out of storage for use as DMRs for some squads in Iraq/Afghanistan.

Anyway find out what day works for you. I will start stocking up on ammo for some time in Oct.
