I'm getting quite a bit back from taxes and I'm letting myself spend 500 of it on the car. As far as mods go, what should I go for? <font color="blue"><font size="2"><font face="Impact">Power</font id="Impact"></font id="size2"></font id="blue"> or <font color="red"><font size="2"><font face="Impact">handling?</font id="Impact"></font id="size2"></font id="red"> If power, what? If handling, what? Lemme know!
Uhh...doesn't it seem weird for other people to decide for you? Which do YOU like better, power or handling?
No, that's not what I was implying. I meant, who has some good suggestions. For example: What's the best bang for the buck? What is a good route to take when starting to modify a car?

A Perrin foam drop in air filter. Plugs and wires. Summer tires and Winter tires
A bigger rear sway bar of course! It's less than $100. I'd recommend at least an 18mm and at most a 20mm if you're not going to get other suspension mods done in a while.
Noah, you can always give me the 500.00 to put towards my car LOL. You can ride shotgun anytime you want... now how's that for an upgrade? LOL
Okay, I heard Whiteline is a good brand. Where to get one? Vic, as fun as that would be for the both of us, I just (for some strange reason) don't think that that will enhance the performance of my <font color="green">1996 Legacy L wagon 2.2L</font id="green">!! You know Zola, the only one of us who doesn't have over 140 HP.
I know IMO but what's IMHO? I hear ya but, I already have been doing that so shush. I have enough voices of reason in my head as it is. Really, let me know what you think! [xx(]
Thanks guys you are all sooo helpful. I think I'll go piss it away one way or another then. ) Or I could do what I've been planning and you guys will see what I did! }

$500 will get you a set of KYB/AGX struts which are a pretty decent suspension upgrade. Or you can sponsor someone's dyno time in April
That's the struts PLUS the install though. I know you gotta spend money to get stuff but that's over my personally alloted financial limit. )
Well, right now I am going with an upgraded muffler and a beefier rear sway bar. The best of both worlds! I might go over budget a little though. I do need new rotors. Does anyone know if slotted rotors wear down the pads faster? I just got new pads all around this summer. Any opinions on a good rear sway bar? Should I get better bushings too? What about rear end links? Okay now I can't stop! I might get stainless steel brake lines too! Okay here's my potential list: 1. New muffler 2. Rear sway bar (brand unknown) 3. Stainless steel brake lines. 4. (maybe) New rotors. I could spend like 100 bucks on side markers. I could spend 120 bucks on STi pedals. or...I could spend 480 bucks on strippers (all $1's plus $20 entrance fee) I think I'll go with the latter.
Hey, Noah. Have you considered setting aside some of the money on things your car will really need? Because it's going to get warmer, you may want to have some money to perform some maintenance on your Legacy. Ex: coolant flush, spark plugs, tranny fluid, PCV valve, fuel filter, air filter, wiper blades, brake/clutch bleed, etc.
You're right Kickin. I usually do most of that myself so it will be cheaper. I just cleaned and re-oiled my air filter. I did all of what you listed last summer except PCV valve, and fuel filter. What do I need done for this spring? I got the fuel filter changed 2 years ago. Last summer I did: Coolant Flush and fill Tranny flush and fill Brake Bleed New air filter Plugs and wires I know if I get the brake lines, I'll have to bleed them again.
You can get... Let's put it this way... I can get a PCV valve for under $5 and a fuel filter for $20 from Subaru for my Impreza. I don't know how different it is for the Legacy. If you can, get them Genuine from Subaru. There's no comparison because Autozone has a plastic PCV valve while Subaru has them in stainless steel. Use that 10% discount at Morries Brooklyn Park Subaru! Coolant, tranny/diff fluid, fuel filter, brake/clutch bleeding, and other 30,000 mile maintenances I do once every year.
Thanks man, I'll do I'll those things as the weather warms up. I know better than to do upgrades with out doing basic maintenance as well. So, I wonder how much <font color="red">I</font id="red"> can get those things for:???: We'll see. I totally forgot about the Morries discount. does everyone at the parts counter know about that though? Or will I just sound like an idiot. <font color="purple">ME: "No really! THEY said you guys knew about it and would give me a discount!" THEM: "Sure pal, jus' cause you go in them chat room thingys, I'm s'posed tuh give you a discount."</font id="purple"> ) Oh yeah, what is the PCV valve again? I remember everyone talking about it and I never asked what it was.
If not ask for Brett, he's the one giving us the hook-up over there. What springs do you have in your car? I've got a set of stock RS suspension if you're interested.
Brett, okay thanks. I have stock suspension... Do you know... Would they fit my 1996 Subaru Legacy Wagon? Are they stiffer and/or shorter than my springs? I don't think they would, but I don't know for sure. You can email me what you're askin' for them. I just can't wait for it to be in a more comfortable ~50 degree range to work on the car!
PCV valve = Positive crankcase ventilation valve. It's located on your intake manifold close to the throttle body. You may need to take off your airbox to get to it. I think this needs to be replaced every 12000 miles per Subaru. If it clogs, then you'll get noticably bad mpg.
Are you kidding? If you can find out that the RS suspension is an upgrade to what you've got and you can fit it to your car it's yours. It's just taking up space in my garage. If you're feeling generous you can give me $20 or something for the springs but I really don't need to sell it so much as get rid of it. The struts aren't in good shape though. The bodies and shafts are fine but the mounting bracets are torn. Dunno if it can be fixed unless someone gets tricky with a welder. The springs might be a bit stiffer than what was in a Legacy but I don't think it would really alter ride height. I also have a stock RS sway bar but I don't think that would fit. Check with Todd on this, he knows Legacies pretty well.
Hey that would be really cool of you. Thanks. I'll talk to Todd, I'm going to see him today after work for some top secret stuff. Do you by any chance know the spring rates at all on those springs? I'll look it up.
