There are alot more options for wheels in the 5x114.3 bolt pattern and I am thinking about converting my '02 WRX. Not to mention you can get EVO MR BBS and STI BBS wheels for much less money than the '04 BBS wheels. So there are two options as I see it. Swapping for the '05 STI knuckles and converting to an R180 rear diff and axles. This place makes the parts to swap: http://www.6gunracing.com/products.asp Or the other option is redrilling the WRX hubs and rotors. I don't think I need all the STI brakes, knuckles, hubs, rear diff nor do I want to pay for it. I think I would prefer just redrilling the hubs. Has anyone done this or know anyone that has? Seems pretty straight forward to me. -Chad
You might be able to use some SVX parts to make this process go easier. I am not sure what is involved in this, but IIRC bikerboy used svx parts to run stock RS hubs w/ a R180 diff. you might try contacting him for some info.
Looking forward to an answer to the OP. What's the price difference on 04 STi BBSs versus 05+ STi BBSs? Hard to believe it is greater than the cost of all the mods required to run the 5x114.3s. I *think* I got a good deal at $900 for silver 04s...seems like most on NAZIACK are going for $1k+.
But then there's the question of what to run for brakes. SVX had crap brakes. Re-drill stock rotors? ewww.........
the brakes actually werent that bad on the SVX, toss anything at that heavy of a car you would see the same
indeed but if you could press SVX hubs into the impreza knuckles. you could get '04 brembo calipers (would bolt up to the knuckles), and '05 sti rotors (same diameter....but 5x114.3). keep in mind that the '05+ sti stuff used different knuckles and therefore specialized struts...which means $$$$$$$ for suspension.
SVX backing plates will not bolt up to the WRX hubs the bolt patern for mounting is different since the WRX has the small bearings and the SVX/STi has the large bearings.
'04 Sti. What happens when I fry my wheel bearings from autocross and big sticky tires? Do I switch to 5x114.3 to get the better bearings? I am having a fun time wrapping my brain around what exactly I would need to purchase. I am hoping to source used stuff over time instead of shelling out $1000 at once, keeps me "under the radar" Also, I suppose it could be done in steps, since at least my summer wheels are dual pattern.
