Ok well i bought the car back in nov. and figured i would run into some issues just by the age of the car and now they are starting to pop up. 1. Can the e-brake wire be tightened?? I will pull it and sometimes it will fall right back down and not stick at all! (sucks when im on a hill) 2. When im driving i will give the car some gas and it will hesitate and sort of shutter. Maybe at half throttle or more. When the car is around 2200rpm's or so, until i get above 3k. 3. just noticed a few days ago some squeeking from the brakes. When i would pick up speed it would get faster until i was a higher speed it would squeek the whole time (20mph's) but tonight on my way to the UPS place (picking up fun stuff pics to come) i noticed the brakes where a little harder to press in. and i pulled into my driveway and put the car in nuetral (clutch all the way in) and let off the brakes it just stayed in place. (Driveway is 25-35 degree incline) should deffinatly have rolled back. Sqweeking and brake problem related?? lemme know if you guys have any thoughts. Thanks guys
does it have any check engine lights? it probably just needs a tune up, and yes the e brake can be adjusted, its in the rear brake setup
No Cel's!!! what would it be about the rear brakes? They are drums right?? just a sticky pad or sumthin
Could be the adjusters in the drums are sticking, could be the sliders in the calipers are seized. Both of those will cause squeaky brakes and the drag. The engine probably just needs a tune up like AWDImprezaL said. Plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter, coolant flush, oil change, check the hoses, and maybe a few other things I'm forgetting.
1) Just put it in reverse and brake a few times going back. That's the way to adjust parking brake. If it does not help - there's wire on the back of the handle. 2) Tune-up is due. Does the CEL come up at all when you start the car? I was looking at a car once that had its CEL disabled with black tape 3) On of the caliper guide pins probably lost its grease and stuck.
Yeah, the drums should self adjust when you brake in reverse, but I usually disassemble and clean them every year to get the dust out and that seems to help. I think there's also an adjustment on the e-brake on the handle where you can adjust the freeplay on the handle. Sounds like yours needs to be loosened, how many clicks does it come up? And check how much pad material is left on the front brakes, they'll start to squeal right before they're totally gone.
if the ebrake handle is not physically staying up, it has nothing to do with the brakes themselves. but the ratcheting device in the handle. easiest way to fix that, is just get a new handle (the little pieces wear out....just grab one from a junkyard). but yes, the ebrake itself can be tightened on the top of the handle. you'll need to pull the center console to get to it (I believe. do on mine anyway). yes, a sticking brake can cause noise......
yeah, my handle has been sticking in the cold, (this is the first week that its done this) I pull the handle up and it drops down. (It's stays up on the 2nd try for me, and I have rear disks) so what chux said.
