Considering maybe buying a 98 Legacy GT wagon with 138 on the clock. MAYBE, trying to get a solid, reliable and cheap ride to eliminate car payments. T-belt and head gaskets were reportedly done. body looks to be in good shape -seller reports that it runs and drives well. I will probably be going to have a look fro myself in the next day or two. What do I need to look for to determine reliability?
I'm guessing that has an EJ25D which is known for the internally leaking head gaskets. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subaru_EJ_engine#EJ25
Thanks E. What can be done about this? Head gasket job, of course - but will it burn oil - how do you test the gaskets other than with a compression tester?
As far as I know, the head gasket issue was with the oem head haskets. If they have been replaced, it should fix the issue. Honestly if they have been done, get a ppi at a shop you trust and if there's no major issues from that I would feel comfortable buying if the price is right. You could also get a compression test done if that helps ease your mind. Legacygt ftw, regardless of year
If it's an automatic pay close attention to the transmission. If the fluid has not been changed regularly the seals can get stiff and it will not want to shift into gear in cold temperatures. I know of a few cars people are limping along with this issue. Also, make sure the transfer clutches feel good. These clutches allow the rear wheels to slip. Make a few tight u-turns with the car and make sure it it does not bind or hop. It will feel like the rear end is partially locked when you are cornering. Some people refer to it as "torque bind". My Outback had this issue when I bought it.
AT or MT? AT is rated for 2000# MT is rated for 1000# http://www.cars101.com/subaru_legacy_archive98_99.html
