I bought a stock air box from a 99rs and I received 2 air boxes with 2 filters. One that sits on top of the motor and mounts to the throttle body, from that air box there is a pipe that goes to another airbox that sits on the right side of the motor.the 2nd box is where the MAF sensor sits. Did I get the wrong air box or did for some reason subaru used 2 air filters that year? everything hooked right up like it was made for the car:dunno:

Pretty sure its supposed to have an air filter in both boxes. You dont NEED a filter in the box that attaches to the tb, but if you run with no filter up there, you need to get a "gasket" that is basically the rubber surround of the filter and a piece of plastic in the middle in order to support the air box.

sorry but NO, ive seen these before at the dealership, it was subarus fault for making two boxes that you could put filters in, so alot of the time they put them in both, there is NO reason to have both.

I have the gasket stil in my box. I've only had my box for 2 months on the car before I took it off and put a '93 Impreza intake pipe on it.

Im not saying there is a reason to have both in besides the fact that they came with both. I was just giving a possible solution for only using one...

Obvioulsy it was Subaru's fault for putting two airboxes in the car...who else would be to blame? I've heard people talk about they put two filters in because this is a car that is meant to be rallied so it need more filtration for the dust and such...I think that's BS.

Subaru made it like this...yes it's their fault because they made it. We can fix it by doing what I suggested. On www.rs25.com there was a story of someone who just took out the filter and the box had some issues because it had no support or something...

PS: I am only running the filter in the box near the MAF and have the gasket in the top box and my car hasn't esploded yet ;)

Bear in mind something though...I removed the box closest to the TB and had some funky issues! I would hit the gas from a stand and then egine would bog down and try to die...put the box back in and the issue went away. The only thing I could put it down to was that it kept a "reserve" of air in there for cases of high demand.

Sounds crazy I know but I heav teh prof!

we're not talking about taking the actual box off...we mean the filter inside the box. That airbox is commonly called the "torque box" because it does keep a lil pocket of air in there for you to use at will. I went from stock to my Cobb CAI, then back to stock and noticed the lil bit of extra low end power that comes with the stock intake.

I pulled the filter out of the airbox near the fender and used rtv silicone to seal it up. it seems to be working good now.

near the fender? that's probably not a good idea...the MAF won't last too long like that.

Please put the filter in the first air box, that's where it needs to be.

I would guess the 2nd filter doesnt need to be changed as often as the 1st, im just going to use both for now.

    Thanks for the help!
