So i changed my pads today, and obviously i got pads for a 99rs. Well the front were the right ones, but the rear were not. Turns out my rear brakes are from 00. Is this just one of those things where subaru started making new brakes in the late production cars of 99 or did the owner before just swap out brakes? it kinda pissed me off cus i had to keep runnin back and forth to autozone and back in my roomies jeep
I got lucky on my car, and the previous owner had swapped out the rear end for an 01. Lift your car up on stands, and spinning one tire, watch if the other side spins the other direction. You might have ended up with an 00 or 01 rear diff with an LSD, which is awesome.
ill check that out tomorrow...my cars still up on stands since i couldnt get the new guide pin and bolt till tomorrow.
I don't recall 99 and 00-01 RS having different brake pads. They are the same size and calipers. I know the older Subarus rear calipers were diff. Sometimes those parts guys don't know what they're getting. Sometimes they think it's a WRX...and such....
They gave me pads that have two tabs on the top and bottom instead of the pads that have on big tab on the top and bottom. I got it all figured though... the two tabbed ones were labled as 99's and the one big tabbed ones were labled as 01.
after a lil research, it looks like the parts store has the wrong part number for the pads. From what ive read, 99's have the same brakes as 00's EDIT: upon further research...it seems as though the DOHC and SOHC engines had different brake pads. The parts store must have it in their computers that all 99's are DOHC EDIT EDIT: so searching www.napaonline.com i looked up rear pads for a 00 and came up with these then i searched for 99 rear pads and got these so you can see what im talking about with the one tab and two tabs thing. I guess my car has 00 rear breaks
Still telling you, I had the same thing happen to me when I did my brakes after buying my car. Get that thing up on stands and spin the wheel. If the other side spins you might have an 00 or 01 rear end. I know its a very slight chance, but its well worth knowing. Like I said, I got lucky. You may have too. Definately check that out.
i only paid about $50 for my semi-metallic pads... im on a budget so couldnt really afford anything more
John16, it sounds like you got ripped off man. Maybe its just me having buddys that work at napa, but I got oem brakes for my 99+my 01 rear end for under 80. That wasnt before the "discounting" they gave me, which im not going to say how much.
Did you spin it? many open diffs will still spin the other tire just because of a slight friction. make sure you have someone else grab the other tire. if your spinning is forcing the other tire to spin in their hands, THEN you have lsd. Just remembered the look on martin's face at meineke when his was spinning . grabbed the other side and it stopped spinning right away
if you PM me your're vin, i'll be able to tell you the part # of the brakes that BELONG on your car, and the brakes on a 2000-2001 to see if they are different, and also to see what they look like in comparison to what you got. they will still have the same shape even if they are oem or non oem
now this is interesting......as far as i know, Subaru uses brake setups that are found on other subarus. example, the RS brake setup that we have are found in the older JDM Imprezas STi and non STi. the WRX brake setup is a combonation of the older STi calipers with the newer STi(non brembos) brackets which allows the bigger rotors. So if it is true that the DOHC and SOHC uses different pads, then something in the past must've screwed it up forcing them to update it. Otherwise, as stated, your rear end has been changed....
you all are missing the point...any REAR END will bolt up just fine!, its the rear brake brackets, ect that are different. what im getting at is, the rear end and rear brakes have little to nothing to do with eachother.
ill pm you my VIN when i get a chance. I found the right brake pads...because, well one set fit and the others didnt
