I was cleaning out my basement the other day when i found 4 130 watt H3 bulbs from the offroad lights i had on my old truck, i have searched both here and nasioc and havent been able to find an answer. I know i will have to use relays, that much wattage will fry the stock wiring, that is no problem, but i havent been able to figure out if it will melt the projector housings for a MY05 projector fogs, anyone know for sure? Also, i was interested in doing a projector HID retro, i would like to maximize the possible light output, while keeping a stock look. My question is this, would it be possible to use a Bi-xenon setup on one set of projectors, and use another without any shields specifically for back road use? Would there really be a benefit of a second set of projectors, and also, while having all 4 of them on at the same time, would that run the chance of melting the housing?
That will most likely melt the stock fogs. There are a few threads on Nasioc of guys who've run higher than normal wattage and fried housings. They're just too small and don't have enough surface area to dissipate the heat. Nasioc has a few lighting threads that are going to have some really good info for you.
i have looked through them, and its lots of "eeh, maybe" or "possibly" answers, something never for sure. i looked through their HID FAQ thread, and its pretty much all about color temp and hid kits, i haven't found anything about a second set of projectors being beneficial or not. it i were to get the larger fog setup on the 05, would 130w still melt the larger sized lights?
Even the large, glass foglights onthe 02/03 will discolor and overheat with a 100W bulb. A 130W in the stock projectors on the newer models would be asking for a meltdown (at beast, fire at worst). Don't do it. Besides, overlamping fogs doesn't do what you want it to anyhow. It makes the ground right in front of your car brighter at the expense of being able to see things at a distance well.
Regarding using a HID int he stock projector headlights. I'd consider that doable and effective, but I'd skip the bi-xenon because it's going to do horrible things through the projector lens, if you could even get one to fit. You could maybe get away with running 100W bulbs in the stock high beams (and maybe not, I don't have a good answer for that). If you really want light for "off-road" purposes (because of course it's illegal on-road), your best bet will be adding extra driving lights. There are some pretty nice light bars out there for subies, and then you could get say a set of Hella FF1000s and some H1 HID conversion bulbs, and really light up the night for pretty cheap.
I've got 4300k HID bulbs in the stock projectors of my 05 LGT. Not optimal, but they work very well. And at $100 for the kit it was a no-brainer.
i really hate doing the PNP hid kits, they are dangerous, i hate oncoming cars that have the kits, its blinding, so i couldn't knowingly do that to other people This thread on hid planet shows what i am talking about, so i know it can be done: http://www.hidplanet.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=43862 i have already tried pming these guys, and haven't heard anything back. With this setup will i see an advantage of the second set of projectors, or something barely noticeable, and not worth the extra cash for the second set?
