I'm painting my calipers black to match the rest of the car and new wheels. Who has done this and what advise do you have on paint and method?

    thanks in advance.

Use a two part brush on paint if you want them shiny and to last a long time, like G2 or Eastwood or something. I used G2 on mine, it costed about 30 bucks for the kit. If you want to go the cheap route you can get spray on crap at any auto store, but the paint will look quite dull and doesn't hold up as well. Here's a picture of how mine turned out.

Um, the paint only looks dull if you get the crappy paint. Get the VHT gloss black. THat is what I used on my calipers. You can use Duplicolor Wheel Clearcoat over the top of that if glossy brakes are your ultimate goal. And get a can of metal prep.

Step one. Mask off the fenders and any other surface you don't want painted....like the rotor surface.

Step two. Spray the caliper with metal prep. Wipe clean with a clean rag. Might want to do this a couple times. Brake parts cleaner is also a good alternative.

Step three. Spray VHT Gloss Black in 3 light coats. DO NOT APPLY TOO THICK. It will run. The composition of this paint is thin to allow it to get into cracks. Allow at the very least 10 minutes of dry time between coats. No more than 1hour.

Step four. Spray 3 coats of Duplicolor wheel Clear Coating. Two thin coats, then one medium coat...again, letting each coat set for at least 10 minutes.

Step 4A. You may wetsand the clear coat after 2 hours to get it super shiny. Using 2000 grit sand paper and a cup of water or a water spray bottle. Wet the paper and sand in one direction. Dry off the surface with a clean towel. Then using 3M rubbing compound, buff the surface till smooth.

Step 5. Remove masking and reinstall wheel. Enjoy your new clean brakes.

    Materials:

VHT Gloss Black Paint. (usually says for calipers)
    Duplicolor Wheel Coat Clear
    Blue Painters Masking Tape
2000 grit Wet or Dry sandpaper

All of the above is available at Checker Auto Parts. And can be purchased for probably under 20 bucks.

I've never used it, but I've heard that the brush on caliper paint sucks to work with.
I've always took my calipers off and sprayed them with primer, paint, and clearcoat to help the fading and chiping.

brush on was very easy, just cleaned them with brake cleaner, and masked them off, and brushed it on. The paint is garuntee'd for life to stay shiny and not chip, and has held up for over a year perfectly.

You've got a serious hard on for this whole "rice" thing. Any particular reason?

You are the voice of someone that has been a member here all of 2 weeks. You have a serious problem. If you want to stir sh1t, go elsewhere. I guarantee you wont get a warm reception at local gatherings with your current attitude.

Yes, 10 minutes between each coat.

All of this stuff is available at Checker Auto Parts. It's at the bottom of my first message.

Ha ha! Hmmm....I didn't know painting calipers gave a person a hard on for rice.....I wish i would know about that on all those long, lonely nights.....

Let's see....My rex is black with no spoiler, black 18's with polished lip, (soon to be) tinted windows, and (soon ) polished black calipers....where's the rice?

I should also explain my black 18's are five spoke so there's a ton of space where you can see through to the caliper and the stock look would be very tacky. I personally like a clean look throughout the car, not just performance.

thanks everyone for your advise and Readymix, thanks for the detailed instructions.

darn it, I thought you were talking to me.....(it's confirmed, I shouldn't try to use my brain before 9am.)

however, i still stand by my thoughts...

No worries Steve. It's your car, you can do what you want. I don't mind painted calipers at all if they're done right and look good. I just can't stand trolls. He's been spouting off in a couple other threads calling other peoples stuff rice, and it's getting really old really quick.

I got my paint on ebay from an authorized distributor called hubcaps plus. I've ordered from them twice, great dealer.
