i have a aem cold air intake that i'm now using as a short ram intake, just used the first pipe and filter and it works great. the turbo spools up quicker and is much more responsive and i get afluttering nosie too.(i would be flying if clutch wasn't slipping in every gear.) anyway now i have check engine light on and my a/f is at 20.0 at idle, but the when i'm driving it's at 14-15. i assume this could be fixed with a wbo2 sensor? and would a accessport help? mods: cat back, uppipe,intake future mods:stage 1 clutch, down pipe, prodrive springs, wheels.
well the ideal (stoichiometric) mixture for a/f is around 14.7, so if by "driving" you mean flooring it your car is running perfect. I guess maybe I dont know if the o/p is a question or a statement....
How're you logging those AFR's? Slapping on any intake is generally a bad idea. However, the AEM intake is one of the better intakes, actually.
Well, higher first numbers = leaner. Air:Fuel ratio. More air = more lean. 14.7:1 is perfect stoic, but the world isn't perfect.
yeah, chopping your intake is gonna mess with your car severely. It's made a certain way to reduce turbulence. If you chopped it, it isn't gonna' be working the way its designed to. You could be making a grave mistake...tick tick BOOM! I've seen the repercussions of a DIY intake...can you say new engine? my $.02

Your not really the n00b that they were talking about. You should however, get a retune to correct the mess of an AFR at idle. It shouldn't be 20:1, that's too lean.

Carbon, my first thought would be to, put the factory intake back on your car. Then report back here with your findings. I'm not sure how accurate the apexi turbo timer is for reading A/F's, maybe Tom or Bullwinkle can share there feelings about this.
I'm guessing the turbo timer is reading from the narrowband o2 sensor in the manifold. If this is the case, then you can pretty much only rely on it when the car is idling or you are cruising at very light throttle on the highway. Either way, your hot air intake really isn't needed (especially with the limited power mods you have). I'd go back to the stock airbox and hack the silencer if you like the swooshing noises.
I just learned in class today that supposedly the most the AF sensor in the car can read is 12:1 to 20:1. That's the richest and the leanest it can possibly read, or so i'm told.
That is for the front stock wbo2 sensor. The reason is the pressure in the manifold will skew the readings. Thats why you install a aftermarket wbo2 after the turbo. Russ
