I was just curious as to what everyone's experience has been with clutches/light flywheels. I'm looking at the ACT's(Cobb drivetrain stage 2) and Exedy's(picking up the rest of the parts from wherever I order this from to match a stage 2 kit - short throw shifter, tranny mount etc.) for my '01 RS. My car has light pulleys on it, not underdriven though. Is it not advisable to have both a light pulley and light flywheel? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys :)

I bought my car with a clutch in it. ACT I think. My tranny has been beaten a little bit:roll:. If you want your tranny to last, I suggest stick with oem clutch, But if you want power over the life of your tranny then go for it :D. It is just hard not to LAUNCH when you have an aftermarket clutch because it bites really good, but will ruin your tranny in the long run because it wasn't built for that.

I've got more than a few passes on my ACT stage 2 clutch. Hopefully my tranny will hold. Pete, if you want to know how an ACT clutch feels like, come by to a meet and sit in my car or Yia's car. You may just change your mind...

    Pick you fuse... (weak link)

Remember with AWD, something has to give.

I like the "feel" of lightened flywheels.

Just don't go all metallic/unsprung/super-stickem or you'll be looking for a new transmission.

I went with the Stg2 ACT and a ~13lb flywheel in the RS. I like it a lot, no issues to date. I like the quick response of the light flywheel, but I didn't go for the 9lb wheels because when I did it the RS was still a daily driver and it would be a b.... in the winter.

I'd rather burn up clutches than trannies but maybe that's just me :)

Thanks for the feedback everyone. It sounds like almost everyone is using the heavy or stage 2 clutches. My car is my daily driver and also I don't believe I have a need for a stage 2. I checked act's website and it appears the clutch cobb uses is the stage one ~360hp. The only reason I'm considering Exedy is because right now there are shops running some great specials on them. Most of whats on my car has come from Cobb and they haven't let me down yet. I plan on eventually doing the stage 1 heads and cams from Cobb along with accessport(not holding my breath)- will I need the heavy clutch to do this or would a stage one work just fine(much less than 360hp even with a small turbo on top of the cams and heads)? And can I use a light flywheel with the OEM clutch should I decide to go that route? Thanks!

For the N/A RS, an Exedy sport/street clutch will be plenty for you. If I remember right, it's about 15% stronger than the OEM clutch. If your car experiences bucking when the car is cold, a new clutch should get rid of it.

Whenever someone asks to upgrade a clutch, someone else always mentions to have a lightened flywheel installed as well. ...well, I'll be that person.

"Since you're upgrading your clutch, why not have a lightweight flywheel installed as well?"

A lighter flywheel (Exedy is recommended) will allow quicker free revving, because it takes less momentum to spin it. It equals to slightly quicker acceleration and better rev-matching. But, you'll have to switch gears a bit quicker (revs drops quicker when you let off trottle), you'll lose a bit of your mpg for highway cruising, and you'll be about $400 less.

I got stock clutch, and I had them since I bought them from the dealer. I'm sticking with the stock one, because it last more longer than aftermarket. But for more power I believe that might be good choice for it. Anyways who hates white subaru that has red on it?

The special I saw is from Nino's auto accesories. Has anybody dealt with them before? They have the Exedy clutch/flywheel combo for $659.99. I'm probably going to buy the Cobb stage 1 kit for $225 and then buy that combo if I can get the money together before the sale ends. Cobb stage 2 is $1,145 so that's over $200 savings with Exedy over ACT clutch/Cobb flywheel. Also, does anyone know of a place around town that might be cheaper than having the dealership do it? Or is this something I should definitely have subaru do?

For the record I talked no smack about red and white :) Whuttup tbone?

The cheapest place to get your clutch/flywheel done at is at Fuji's bro's garage. Fue, Lee, and Lue (maybe bikerboy, too) will need a bit of persuasion and you may have to walk around their garage on your knees and hands (they'll enjoy that enough to help you out), but the job will get done. Fuji did his in a day and it's been treating him very well since this spring. :)

I may be putting down the most torque from my engine so speaking from experience the ACT pro clutch hasn't broken my GC8 RS transmission... yet. I don't know what this stiffer pedal thing is about though, I'd take this over the throw the clutch on my DSM had. Just thinking about thing makes my leg hurt. It grabs like mad though and is almost like a button. The little in-between on that clutch disappears quick when it engages.

I've read somewhere that the Subaru clutches from the factory are a lot softer than the average car out on the road. Maybe it's because Subaru wanted the ideal daily driver for their customers year-round. Who knows, but back to the subject. ACT clutches in comparison to the OEM clutch is a good workout for your left leg. ;)

Whuttup everyone? Sorry I like didn't conclude this thread...I just got a new job and all that and everything has been crazy lately. I ended up going with the Exedy Stage 1 clutch and the Exedy light flywheel from Nino's(just ordered Sunday). Once I have the short throw and tranny mount(should be in a week or two) I should be ready to rock with all this. Fong and Morgan, would you or your friends still be willing to help me with this for beers? I know next to nothing about swapping a clutch. If you guys would hit me back it would be appreciated. Thanks.

lol did you look at the start date? this car was wasted by the person I sold it to 2 years ago when I bought my sti. I did end up going with the Exedy though so at least it crashed with a grippy clutch.
