Well the Saabaru got rear-ended today I was on my way to Afton with my girlfriend to go skiing...driving south on MN95, snow was blowing like crazy. The people in front of me came to a stop, in the middle of the blowing snow, complete white out. I couldn't go around (2 lane road) and couldn't see squat behind me. I turned to my gf and said, we're gonna get nailed, better brace yourself. Not a minute later...boom, mini van nails us Fortunately I had backed up a hair so I did not hit the car in front of me. After talking with the police, there were more than 20 cars involved in accidents at the scene. I'm not sure if it's totaled yet, but the claim has been filed. Since KBB and NADA only value the car around $4,500-$6,000 and it takes round 70% (?) of the car's value to declare it totaled...it might be donezo. Plus, Saabaru body parts are becoming hard to find. On a side note, I'm pretty sure that I saw Yusef drive by in a black Forester while I was waiting on the side of the road. Hope you made it home safely. From the back it doesn't look terrible, but you can see the outer frame of the hatch opening has been pushed in. The bumper beam was crushed in pretty far too. And oddly enough, even though it was at the rear of the car, my steering wheel is now crooked Pics of the carnage: If it is totaled, I would like to pull the suspension off of it and some other parts...that being said, I sold my stock springs, so if anyone has some 04-07 wrx/impreza springs around, hit me up!
Bummer man! Never want the life of a Subaru or Saabaru to end that way. Good luck with insurance, hope it works out for ya.
Thanks guys, just some whiplash but were fine so far. As far as next car, it's up in the air. It's been between what I really want and spend more (infiniti G37 or similar), a newer legacy or forester, or something economical like a accord, Camry, Altima, etc. I don't really want to give up the awd on the DD.
Thanks for the concern man. I want something with more legroom than an impreza, and something with a better interior and options than subaru. All in flux though until the insurance check is in my paw.
Sorry to see/ hear that, but to echo all of the above, very glad you and the GF are OK. Let me know if you need a ride anywhere, OR get rid of those coilovers and DD the STI!!!
Step 1: revert sti to stock and take insurance for saabaru Step2: buy evo Step3: ?????? Step 4: profit!
Jordan!! I totally saw you and was planning to swing around and lend a hand! The carnage behind you was ridiculous! There were at least 8 cars buried in the snow and many others much more heavily damaged. The sheriff wouldn't let me turn around to go back. Let me know if I can help in the aftermath!! Sorry the saabaru got hit...such a nice car!
Sucks to hear Jordan, hopefully insurance takes care of you.Living in Woodbury it was a blizzard so I can't imagine the open fields in Afton being safe. Hope everyone is okay and make sure you get checked out and have insurance cover it.
Ha I thought that was you, thanks for the thoughtfulness. Fortunately it was still drive able so we left one we got the police report. Glad you made it through ok too...it was pretty nasty. That was one of the worst feelings...sitting there stopped in a cloud of snow, knowing you're gonna get nailed. Thanks man, we haven't been to the doc yet cuz were only a little sore. We'll see how we feel tomorrow.
If you are sore, go to the doctor...I promise, a lifetime of neck pain is not worth it. I had a major accident in 1999, never went to the doctor, pay for it every day...
Sucks about the car but so glad to know your both ok... This weather is just nuts were having. I agree with yusef you should go get checked out because you never know what feels minor could be worse.
Glad you're both ok!! That sucks . I wouldn't worry about it being totaled though, just needs a new taillight and the rest should buff out.
Although I like bmw's and other german cars, its still the cost of ownership that makes me shy away. Ha right. Well I know it's tough to tell from just pictures, but in your professional opinion, do you think they will total it out? It looks like the bent up frame of the hatch opening would be a pain and expensive to repair...
Hope you're OK. Gotta try and sit with the head against the headrest (and you're body relaxed) if you think you're going to get hit. I got rear ended once and saw it coming at the last second and put my head on the headrest and I was fine. My wife didn't and had neck pain for about 6 months
Yea I was trying to sit straight in the seat with my head back. I saw the guy at the last split second due to the poor visibility so I had a small amount of time to prepare myself. I felt bad that I couldn't give my girlfriend a head's up to prepare herself...it just happened so fast. My neck isn't too bad and she is in a little more pain unfortunately.
Sorry to hear about the car. Make sure you both get checked out. I know too many people suffering with back/neck pain due to unassuming whiplash. Someone is telling you to stay off the skis. The roads on Saturday morning weren't very good going to Welch, apparently they were much worse on Sunday. Good luck with the outcome, if you need a new car, maybe a Fiesta ST?
No kidding, right! First the shoulder injury, now this. It's been a rough ski season. A Fiesta might be a hair small for my tallness, but I don't think a Focus ST would be out of the question. I kind of want to stick with AWD for the DD though.
It's hard to tell from the pics on my phone, but I'd be very surprised if it didn't total out. Between a new hatch door (possibly fixable but hard to tell where the buckle is from the pics), bumper cover, absorber, impact bar, taillight, and quarter damage alone you're looking most likely in the $3k range and that isn't even including anything else found after it's torn down plus frame time, welding in new metal for the hatch support if it can't be saved, broken clips, brackets, etc. Depends on the insurance company what percent they'll fix it up to but if you're thinking it's current market value is a conservative $6k, even if you bought it back as a salvage you'd be upside down in it .
Hope you guys recover from the soreness, glad it wasn't too serious. Does this mean the STi is coming out of hibernation?
Cool, thanks for the info! Good deal, I will keep you posted. Of course not! How is that garage heater working though? Mine is a wee bit chilly for swapping struts lol. On a side note, both the gf and I scheduled appointments with our docs to get checked out. Seems like the smart and right thing to do.
Just make sure you keep receipts for any expenses related to the Dr.. MN no fault insurance will kick in giving you $20k for medical expenses and $20k for lost income from missing work.
oh man, last time I had a chevy cruze for a rental I returned it and it was smoking from under the hood. I definitely beat the hell out of it that little turbo.
After some more discussion last night at the meet with some others that have had similar situations, I' I'm still waiting on the adjuster, but after some discussion at the meet last night, I'm thinking it is more than likely totaled. It's hard to tell from the pics, but the frame for the hatch opening is pretty bent up....like when the hatch is "closed" (it won't latch), there is about a 2 inch gap on one side. Thanks for the head's up on the leggy, checking that out now!
Man that's terrible, glad neither of you were badly hurt. I was on my way home from afton alps in that same blowing snow and had a few close calls too, that was the worst visibility I have ever had to drive in.
Update: GF and I have both been to the doc, we both have some whiplash, but hot packs/ice and some rest, and we'll be fine. Adjuster was here today, car was determined to be totaled (over $6k in damage, said he couldn't even find used parts for the stuff) and I will be paid out. The payout is more than fair, and apparently they also are including the sales tax that was paid and a refund for the amount remaining on my tabs. Good thing...because I just renewed them this month!! On a side note, while we were inspecting the vehicle, I saw how much more the frame was messed up (explaining the crooked steer wheel). The passenger rear fender was actually pushed forward and closed the gap where it meets the door. The adjuster said that fixing the frame normally isn't a big deal...interesting. I'm still waiting on the final details and the buyout price. In that case, anyone want to buy a rally car? lol I'm thankful that we're ok and how things turned out. I'll miss the saabaru, but its time to move on.
Fool me one, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. http://mnsubaru.com/threads/fs-2005-saab-92x-aero-saabaru-2005-subaru-wrx-wagon.45349/ I can't get fooled a 3rd time!
People with think I'm friggin mental..."why have you bought the same car in the same color, 3 times!"
