I've always been into good audio, even at a young age of 16, i had a home theater setup in my parents house. Since then i have gone through many amps, pre amps, DACs, speakers and everything else. Anybody here
I wouldn't call myself a audiophile but I do enjoy the sound from a quality set of cans or home theater speakers. That said 90% of today's youth/young adults don't know what good sound is....My current home theater setup consists of 2 Cerwin Vega AT15 speakers in the front 2 Cerwin Vega LS12's in the rear Two Cerwin Vega HT S15 subs and a Cerwin Vega HT-CTR. They are all powered by a Onkyo Tx-SR600. Would sound alot better if I ever get around to powering the AT15's with some real power. (Ignore the mess. Subs Are hard to see sitting under the AT15's)
Mmmmmm...Cerwin Vegas. Nice set up mang!! Vegas are what got me interested in nice sound equipment back in the day. I am an audiophile. It's part of the reason why i like dubstep so much. Watching a good set of subs flexing 37 different ways from the whomp whomps
Yea for speakers that are as old as I am( In the case of the AT15 quite literally as older then me. March 1988 build date stickers on them) they sound amazing and still hold there're value. The AT15's in good shape still sell for $400 a pair on ebay.
I was like that way for a very long time because i had a 98 ranger lol but it has shifted the other way now that have the 14 STI. Funny how things work! If you can acknowledge that fact that iPhone ear buds or best buy home theater in the box sets are $%#@, you are definitely an audiophile. I use to have a set of Tyler Acoustic PD30's (very small speaker company) and man did those things sound nice! Spent $5,000 on the pair, they better sound good!!
I've machined many audio projects over the years. I can post them here if you guys want. Theres a lot lol
Not sure if I'd say audiophile, but I have built some DIY projects over the years... I'll see if I can find a way to dig up some pics.
I have a modest home theater/ daily setup. Klipsch Speaker's all 7 and klipsch sub. With a Pioneer SC-65 running it. All the wires are audio quest. I would like to run a dual sub setup in the future.
I'm running Definitive Technologies BP30 fronts, a Def Tech CS-8080HD center with built in powered sub, and Def Tech BP2X rears with a Sunfire Cinema Grand 5X200 amp and a Marantz AV8003 pre/pro. I have the Sunfire theater grand pre amp but had to upgrade because it didn't recognize the latest audio encoding from movies ( dolby true hd/dts master audio). Now all I need is a bigger house with a proper sized room for this stuff.
You mentioned needing a bigger house, but man there's got to be a way to layout your setup better than that - those are bipolars, they need to be at least a couple feet away from the back wall or else they won't sound right at all!
I'll post a bunch of pictures tomorrow. Any of you guys heard of Emotiva? I owned several of their products!
It'll all started simple. Little trim pieces, new faceplates, record weights and cables (btw these are old pictures, old apartment and i no longer own any of this stuff lol)
These photos were taken by Ben Johnson @xluben I currently sell these. Soon we'll be selling these through a distributor in London for world wide sales!
I've owned many things from Emotiva but never any powered monitors. Personally been to 3 of their Emofest's and they had the 6 and 8's playing in many demo rooms. Very high build quality and great sound that shouldn't be had for so cheap. I'd recommend them. Give it a try, they do a 30 day return policy Their Stealth monitors on the other hand are absolutely killer and could make for a very awesome desk 2 channel or 5-7+ channel home theater.
Awesome thanks! What else would you recommend for a smaller setup want good quality but it would be nice to crank it up once in awhile (it's for our cabin).
The 6 and 8's do play to a nice level!! Remember they are powered internally, so all you are doing is running a signal cable to them and a power cable to the wall outlet. But i would would pair it up with Emo's XDA-2 DAC. It accepts all the digital inputs. I've owned serval DACs lol Or you could buy some longs cables and just run it off your iPod or music device.
Thanks! Now we know you all have crazy home setups. What are you guys using for on the go as far as headphones!?
I'm a headphones guy : ) My 'daily drivers' are Sony V6's with velour earpads, I have some Sennheiser HD380 Pro's for work (sound isolation), and some Grado SR-80's for home.
Well, I don't really have anything on this caliber yet.. But @DavidPHumes introduced to me this world many years ago. I'm mostly into headphones at the moment. Current Audio Gear: Bowers & Wilkins P5 - First "nice" headphone I purchased These live at home and travel with me from time to time. Sennheiser 598HD - Favorite pair of cans to date These live on my desk at work. Bose MIE2i - Running/Workout in ears Might be looking into something else.. But these server their purpose. Anyone workout with the BW C5s? Audioquest Dragonfly 1.2 - USB DAC for work Just bought this about 2 weeks ago. From the little listening I have done it is a very impressive addition to my 598s. For a DAC under the $200 dollar mark I would say it does a damn good job. Future Plans? Hopefully get my home office outfitted with a decent DAC and some monitors. I have looked at a couple different options, but it is really less of a priority with all of the other projects/hobbies I have going on. And then of course, the home theater/listening room will come some day when there is more square footage to play with.
Those are some nice can's!!! Any guys listen to vinyl here? I was into it like crazy a few years ago and made two tables but have been out of the game since selling my second table. I've thought of making a new table (v3) and selling it through my company as well.
I have a smaller collection of vinyl.. I dont have the right components to make is sound good though... I figured build the collection now and really open it up down the road.
I'm also rocking the Shure SE 215's when I travel, mainly on the plane. Awesome bang for the buck. And Matt, very nice home setups! I've put my home audio investment on hold until I buy a house and can actually appreciate a quality system without disrupting the neighbors lol.
I had e2's for nearly a decade and finally got the SE215 this year. Nice step up IMO. Good value for sure.
I think this winter I'll finally make another turntable (version 3). Just start with a Hurst motor and everything else will be made on a cnc. Should be fun. I'll be making a shift knob, radiator and alternator shrouds for my Sti as well Anodized red!!
I have 80% of a Gyrodec that I would like to make complete. It needs the aluminum"sub chassis" for the arm board and bearing mounts, plus a spider style plinth for the feet. Do you really mean a hurst synchro motor? I like the idea of $50 vs. $500 for the one Michell sells. Is making an aluminum chassis "cost effective" for you? ie. less than $300? I might be able to get a factory one for that.
Yes a Hurst AC synchro motor, they are very cheap and run off wall voltages. Both my first and second tables used them. It can be cost effective. My first table weighed 118lbs and had $1,800 is raw materials and parts in it. So if I made something simple it would be cheap lol
I'll have to PM you about this at some point. The original chassis is sort of like 3 connected rings out of one piece of cast aluminum. If it were one rectangle with a few holes in it instead, it would work fine, and only require some stiffer suspension springs to compensate for the extra weight. Also the Hurst would need some kind of outboard mount. The stuff you have made looks great. Recently picked up a Lexicon 512. Possibly ordering an Oppo 105D this week.
Anything is possible. Nice thing about metal, it can be changed very easily Those Oppo players sound very nice but they seem to release new players like cell phones lol One model after another.
Alright, so you guys motivated me to pull out the Pete Millett-designed hybrid tube/SS headphone amp/preamp that I built probably 8 years ago Everything is dusty as heck, but I checked the tube bias and they were within .1V of their original setting (and each other) after sitting for all that time, I guess using quality components pays off... It's a pretty nifty design, uses 12AE6 12V-heater triode tubes from the 50's that were originally designed for car radios(!), with a 24V single-rail regulated PS - so both the heaters from the two tubes are stacked in series across the rails, simple and safe for a tube newb like me. The plates are biased at about 17V. The output stage is a simple OL buffer using two paralleled BUF634 250mA high-speed buffer opamps per channel, which is complete overkill for headphones but I wanted to drive 32ohm Grados without breaking a sweat. It turns out that it makes a nice little computer speaker amp as well LOL. Overall a fun little project!
