Any dealers that install Hawk brake pads on an STi?

I've got a set of Hawk HPS brake pads all ready to go in my STi, just in time for our impending cold snap. And here I am, without a heated garage. Maybe I've gone soft in my old age, but I'm not thrilled at the prospect of installing brake pads and bleeding a brake system in 15-degree weather.

I've called Morrie's BP Subaru, and they said they'd "try" to install them. I'm pretty anal about cars, to be honest, so "trying" isn't good for me.

I've called Bloomington Acura-Subaru (hey, Scott, I tried), and they're not willing to even "try".

I've yet to meet a nice, knowledgable person on staff at Morrie's Minnetonka, so that only leaves me a couple of options.

The question is, am I just running into all the wrong people? Is there a dealer that will install Hawk HPS brake pads on an STi?

Where are you STi owners all bringing yours to be put on?

If I thought I could wait until spring without wrecking my rotors, I'd just do it myself....

what is so hard about installing hawk pads.. they are just pads correct???

I guess I've always done these myself...the Brembo's make it so easy to change out the pads.

I have installed them on an STI at my shop. The only thing is I cant guarantee that they wont squeak. I had a problem with the last sti we put hawk pads in.

'cause they want to make the $$$ selling the pads also.

On top of that there is no excuse if something goes wrong because the customer brought in the wrong pads or something like that.

Offhand, I'd say they were probably covering their bases as they've never installed those here before and probably don't know if there's anything different to them or if they come with hardware or not. Keep in mind, the vast majority of the Subaru techs have no idea about any of the aftermarket parts that are available, they know stock parts and that's about it. Also, dealerships are under a different set of circumstances, as we have to enforce warranty rules, etc. and so installation of aftermarket parts can put us in a bind with Subaru and/or the owner. Honestly, for something like this I'd say Nathan is your best bet. I have yet to see any complaints about his work and he's bent over backwards in the past to accomodate the club and the members and he knows Subarus as well as anyone I've met.

Seriously brake pads on my wrx were the easiest I've ever done, you could do a brake pad swap both sides in 20 minutes including jacking up the car, and with a 10 minute break in between sides.

It's not a question of how easy they are...Because aftermarket stuff is outside of the scope of what these mechanics are trained on and what they've worked with, they can't guarantee them and that makes dealerships very nervous indeed, because we are liable to both the customer and Subaru.

LOL, have you even been there before? If you went to the parts counter, Erik is there and he is nice and knowledgable. Driftin240 aka Brian on the boards and his brother SubyTek aka Ben both work in the service department and are both very nice and very knowledgable. Both do great work.

Funny, I'm generally not. I'm simply speaking from the perspective who knows more about these cars than the average bear. The few times I've been to Morrie's Minnetonka Subaru I've apparently encountered the least knowledgable and less helpful folks there, based on what you all are saying.

You're not exactly representing your dealership well with your post, though. If I walked into a business of any sort and someone addressed me in that manner, not only would I never come back, I'd also actively recommend that people avoid it. That's exactly the wrong attitude to approach customers with.

Nooo ... don't want to work in 15-degree weather. It's winter, see, so it gets a bit nipply out. No heated garage + winter = no working on cars for me.

I'd leave it until spring and do it myself, except that the pads are worn enough that I'm concerned they won't last that long. Better to take care of it proactively, than wait for the inevitable grinding noises....

All I did was explain why I'm not pursuing having it done at Morrie's Minnetonka Subaru, based on my past experience there. You're the one that took it personally.

If you're one of the nice, knowledgable people who works there, then evidently I never encountered you there. Had I encountered someone nice and knowledgable, my experience would have been different. But it wasn't, and as a consumer that's going to affect where I bring my business.

If you went out to a reasonably expensive restaurant, had a rude server, and they didn't make the food right, would you go back? I sure wouldn't. Maybe there are some great cooks, and some nice servers. But still, would you insist on going back, or would you just go somewhere else to eat?

Now, unprofessional? As I said, I'm not making it personal. If I'd said, "so-and-so is a jerk", that would be personal. I simply stated that, unfortunately, I haven't met people at the Minnetonka Subaru dealer that made me want to go there again. That says nothing about you - just about the people I've encountered there. How you decide to take it is your choice.

Noted, but dont let one bad apple spoil the bunch, if you do ever come back, see courtney, and request ben or brian to work on your car. also either of the morries subaru dealers are the only ones that discount parts and labor for mnsubaru/awdaddicts/t3hw00t members.

ZenBoy, just give Mnkta a call and talk to the right person...or ask for Erik, Brian, or Ben...in Parts/Service I'm sure they can help you out...I've met Erik and Brian briefly and have known them (internet) on MNsubaru for about 12 months now, wow! It's been a year already...They won't steer u wrong...from what I see they have been more helpful, than not.

    Zen-

I don't know what person/people you have talked to, but I can assure you that I can/will install your pads. The only catch is, there is no warranty on them. That's why we usually don't install aftermarket stuff. Sorry that you've had a bad experience here....but now the MNSubaru group ownes this place.

Bring me your car, and your pads, and i'll get you taken care of.

Noted, thanks. I'm chatting with Nathan about going down there for the brakes, but if something falls through or I need work done in the future, I'll give it another shot as long as I know who the good 'cooks and servers' are. ;)

I figured that Morrie's in BP or Luther's in Bloomington would be able to help me too, but the trick is always to know who to talk to when you ask for something like that.

Of course. Part of the issue is that you can't be sure who's going to perform the work the next time you go to the place in question - it could be the same person that caused problems the first time.

If you didn't have a good enough overall experience despite the problems, then it's easier to take the risks of going to an entirely new shop.

Hate to resurrect this post from the dead, but I wanted to give credit where credit is due.

Thanks to everyone for the input. I did eventually bring it to Morrie's Minnetonka, and Ben did an excellent job putting the Hawk pads on.

What's more, I broke a FSB endlink a few weeks after that, and was able to get a replacement set sent out overnight by Turn-in Concepts, then managed to get squeezed in for an emergency appointment at Morrie's where Ben put the new endlinks on.

Kudos to the Minnetonka crew. They've more than stepped up to the plate.
