just thought id ask. anyone else big into sled on this sit. sleds used to be my life as i used to race for polaris so. i still love to ride even know the only sled i have left anymore is broken right now (no snow anyway). just wondering if sometime anyone want to ride.
ME ME ME... I had a thread up untill last week. I was looking to put a ride together, but due to lack of snow & general intrest I canceled it... Some of us put up snowmobiling pics in this thread: http://mnsubaru.com/threads/snow.35433/ I bumped it around post 20... thats where the fun begins!!!
o sweet. ya i got to put new rings on the dragon, somehow they only read 90 PSI, its all messed up, ran fine for half a day and then that happened. just my luck. here ill post a few up.
lucky guy you. this year has sucked for snow though. usually im at 1500+miles by now. this is not a 4k winter
I have been known to put on 3500-4k a year... One year I put on 2300 miles in 8 days... I think I hit every spot worth seeing in the UP during my trip from Copper Harbor to Ironwood to Drumming Island and back... Alone it was a blast
I'll put around 500 miles on my sled per year, would like to do more... My 800 is out of commission with a bad stator currently. OP, how did you get into racing for Polaris? Just start out in amateur class and work your way up? I've always wanted to do that, but never had the funds/direction.
ya i did 446 one day. nevis to international falls and back all in the ditch. we were a little tired when we got back. we had quite a few race days we put on 200+ just racing. ya i started racing am in the USCC and went up from there. basically to get into the race program you just have to apply and send them a resume. i had lots of other sponsors on top of that but it still costs alot. racing am isnt so expensive. cross country am is probably the cheapest. you can take a trail sled and just go race and have run. once you start into semi pro and higher it starts getting really competative which means expensive. i ran 2 sleds, and 2 classes every weekend basically. it takes alot of time to keep up with it.
I try to get 1000-1200 mi/year. Ride out of my garage in Savage (MN river valley is a blast when it isn't solid ice) and we take a few trips up to Lk Vermillion every year. Fast trail riding only, don't do the lakes... 09 Polaris 600 Dragon (all dressed up and nowhere to go!)
i like to ride its more of a passtime then a hobbie. but still repairing the sled from the last innocent haha. Sleds a 98 500zl now has a 1.5" paddle on it haven't got to ride it since i put that on but need to weight the clutch to bring the top end down some and get some more useable torque out of it. Jumped a beaver house going a little faster then i should have been and the front came up and before i could even react it was over lol best deduction i could make is i broke my ankle, didn't have heath insurance so never went in just hobbled around on it till it got better. Made driving a act street hd clutch pretty difficult as its a pretty heavy clutch haha.
I am not, in any way, a "big sled guy" but man do I enjoy it. A buddy of mine gave me a 1996 XLT LTD a few years ago that his brother put into a tree. I found some parts on Craigslist and got it back together for the most part. I still need a windshield and maybe a hood but it's not a beauty queen. Before: After: Before: After: 2010: 2011:
ya isnt fixing sleds fun. i totalled both my 08 and 09 dragons at the I500 in thief river two years in a row. we stripped them down, put new bulkheads, tunnels, a arms, shocks, skis, etc, in them before the next weekend. o how i dont miss those nights.
na i got the thing put 2 geather but the sled just revs up and dosent move i think the clutch is froze but havent had enough snow to make it worth my time 2 mess with. i do need a whole new bar in the back and tail-light lol
im not sure my brother was the one that put it all back 2 gather for me i was in the middle of working alot of overtime. Next time im up north i can check it out some more and see exactly what it was doing, If i remember right though he said it would just rev up(not sure how high) but the clutch would never squeeze in. Idk if thats any help
ya that kinda helps, sounds like the primary is not engaging which would most likely be a spring problem or the spider tower is stuck
Possibly. we are going to see if we can get it to free up other wise if we cant get it off what would you charge if i pull it off and send it to you to look over?
not much man. my presses are both up north but im going there next weekend to work on the car so i could grab them. i have had springs break before and game the sprider so it would slide. if its the primary that is the first thing id check. if it will engage the primary but not move you need to adjust the secondary faces in and probably get a new belt. also check the center to center distance of the clutches. you may have to loosen the motor mounts and slide it forward a hair.
its possible it could have something put 2 geather wrong when we put the drive wheel back on as we took that off to install the new track.
ya there are keys in the secondary, and both gears, could have forgot to put one of those in, then it wont spin the track
ok yea i havent done enough 1st hand stuff with it to know exactly whats going on but when i go up there next time and have a chance to mess with it i will do so.
o, long ways from where i spend much time. i spend alot of time over by park rapids so if it was close id swing over and help
Yea park is like a 2hr drive from there haha if i had a place to store it id have it down here in the cities working on it but alas my parking stall i pay for is occupied by the subi. Plus no way to haul it anywhere down here to ride haah
hell man if your ever up hit me up. im parents ranch is in nevis which is where the sti project is at which mean ill be up there most weekend this winter and spring. i love it up there, way better then cloud - the hot girls everywhere in cloud lol.
Cool! We are up there alot in the summer. We are in the process of building a place. Next winter I'll be up there all the time.
o sweet man. where at on long? its a long lake lol. i cant tell you how many guys have blown there sleds up just running full out all the way across. ya im 1 mile south of nevis. my parents are in the process of adding on too and moving there full time (my dad retired in august).
We are on the east side towards the north end of the lake near the bears den golf course. I'm in the process of getting my 98 MXZ 500 back up and running. I'm looking forward to next winter and having a 4 season place to stay at. mostly looking forward to getting back into riding and ice fishing.
I am lucky to be alive the way I used to ride. Once we had a kid I put the sled away. I think it's time to break er out. Now that my 5 year old has a kiddy cat someone has to show her how to skip water LOL....
pulling out an old old thread of mine but im sure theres new people on here now and I have been on in a long time. any other big sled guys on here? its been a decent snow year this year minus the cold but we have got out and done some good riding this year. was really hoping to ride this weekend but the weather sucks and realized I broke stuff last weekend I didn't realize. that's typical for me though. 4 hard days of riding, broke the sled pretty good twice, about average for me.
I'm into vintage sleds. Just finished swapping a hybrid 340/295 polaris (fuji) into a 72 chaparral firebird, she weighs about 4 lbs and RIPPPPS.
