I've got a 98 2.5rs and the clutch has had a little slip in it for a while now. I figured since I've got a week off, I should try and get it done before classes start. I'll gladly supply food/drank/money for lending a hand. I've replaced a clutch before, but never on a subaru. I'd rather have an experienced person around to work with. I have tools and a garage, but it's up to you where you'd like to do it. Thanks
lol I know it's sunday. Haha what do ppl do on sundays except sit around all day. Or is that just me?
Colin, I have to ask, do you hold the car up with one hand and then just pull the tranny out with the other?
nah, he just crawls under and disconnects everything and then just grabs ahold of the intake manifold and lifts it all right out the top.
no, I pull it into the mechanics bay, unhook the neg battery terminal disconnect the intercooler from the turbo and place it out of the way, then take the master cylinder off the tranny, unplug all the tranny wiring (and the EGT and front O2 because I'm doing the upipe to) then the pitch stop is disconnected and I remove the starter and the clutch fork gets loosend I then raise the car and remove the front wheels, and camber bolts. then take the car all the way up. I then drop the dif gaurd and remove the driveshaft I then remove the remaining tranny bolts and then set up the tranny jack. I use a punch on the pins in the axles and push them off. I pull the tranny mount and lower/work the the tranny bakc and off. Then I lower it out of the car. next i disconnect the DP and the heatshields/sensors heat shield take one engine mount nut off and jack the engine to remove the upipe. re-install the new pipe. and reverse the process. Only I forget/undertighten a starter bolt. Then after I return the car, the starter works it's way out a 1/4 inch and I need to fix it in the parking lot of the local go kart park.
a friend of mine prefers to pull the engine for clutch jobs since he doesnt have a car lift. he is pretty fast at it that way now.
Repetition creates speed. It's nutty what some of you guys can do in a small time frame. I'm slow as hell at new stuff typically, but anything I've done a bit is quick. The last time I took apart an engine was in shop class...15 years ago. I want to do timing belt, cams, and clutch/flywheel sometime within the next year, should be a fun process whenever that happens.
