I know this is so random, but I might as well give it a shot. you never know. there's a RS '00 in savannah,GA that I think might be a good deal. the engine has 30k on it, was replaced in '06, it also has a new clutch done about 3k after the new engine was put in. it looks clean and the guy showed me the receipts for everything. I also ran a carfax, FWIW, and it is clean and the mileage matches with what he says. he's asking 7,500 but he said if I show up with 7k he'll give it to me. he also suggested that I call the place where he got the work done and that he can take the car up there. I asked for a video and he said he'll do it. but it's in freaking savannah,GA. DAMMIT! so by any chance is there anybody you know who can go and check the car? I can definitely pay some money.

I bought my turbo RS from a guy in Boulder with about the same information that guy is feeding you. I flew out there on a round-trip ticket and ended up driving it back to Minnesota. Of course the guy I bought it from had been a solid member of NASIOC (back when there weren't so many d-nozzles there) and had documented most of his work over the year he had the car so I had a LOT of substantiating evidence. Did you check to see if this guy is on any forums with that car or once belonged to another forum member?

IIRC, there's a member of www.subaruforester.org in Savannah. I wanna say his username is "greentrees" but I'm not sure if it's him or someone else. The forum is down for maintenance / upgrades so I'll try to find him/her later on today.

The guy I bought from wasn't too sure either but I had talked with my insurance agent about the car before flying out and he said my existing insurance would cover the new vehicle until I had the new policy written up with them. I just had to carry a copy of my existing insurance card in case something did happen. That, combined with the stub of the title you keep when you purchase the car, is enough should you be pulled over on the drive home. Same thing goes for the license plates, you need to keep the original ones with the car until you get it back and pay taxes and titling to get new plates for it. Even if they are vanity plates and the original owner wants to keep them you need to leave them on the car until replaced. If the original owner really wants them back then FedEx them to him once yours are on.

Overall I had a great experience buying out of state, but I had a lot of supporting evidence on the car from almost a year of posts on NASIOC (then still i-Club). He picked me up from the airport in the car, we stopped at a local track where he had raced the car and heard from some of the other drivers how the car handled (dunno if this was a total set-up or what, but the track was on the way back to his place from the airport), went to his buddy's shop and put it on a lift, did compression tests, went over the details of the install, then took it for a test drive in the mountains (sold me right away) and they even took me out to dinner afterwards. If only all car-buying experiences could be between enthusiasts like us who really care about our cars.

My guess is that you won't have to change title over in Georgia. Transferring title is usually as simple as him signing it over to you - the title itself has blocks to fill in for that.

Here's the MN title info page: http://www.dps.state.mn.us/dvs/MotorVehicle/Information/Vehicle frame.htm

Before you make the trip, be certain that he has the title in hand to sign in person. If a lien-holder still has it then you'll have to jump through some minor hoops with his lender.

Here's a link to some Georgia info: http://motor.etax.dor.ga.gov/

Yeah, there should be a stub that he retains that he has to file with the DMV there to make sure the title transfer goes through to cover himself. For instance I sold my DSM to a guy who then didn't transfer the title and suddenly I was getting arrest warrants for all the tickets and stupid crap he was pulling. Come to find out the card I mailed in to transfer the title had been lost in one of the many piles of them sitting around waiting to be dealt with.

Be sure to bring your part of the title into the DMV and pay the tax on it and get your new plates right away. Don't be a **** and wait to do it.

got it! how much is tax on a 2000 impreza? why is it bad to wait to get new license plates? it's gonna be crazy because I have a KS DL, a GA plate and I am in minnesota. but since I am not a permenent resident I don't wanna get a MN DL
