So i have a 96 Geo Metro that i need to replace the transmission for but dont know where to start. Anyone ever worked on a Geo before? Any advice would be appreciated it. Thanks
Get a Haynes manual for it and follow the instructions. Label everything as you remove it/disconnect it. With a little car like that, it's probably easiest to pull the transmission and engine together. Often it's easiest to drop the whole assembly out the bottom rather than lift it out the top with a hoist.
why its out you might as well do a whole engine swap if you can find one for cheap. or at least turbo the ****er.
you have to take the trans out with the engine, and I believe standard procedure is out the bottom. it looks like a pain, the driveshafts have to come out. my trans never came out, but looking at it as simple as the car is, I didnt want to deal with it.
no no no :nono: if you are going to have a slow car, it may as well be as slow and economicly practical as possible. with my subaru and my geo I would say I spend that of someone with a taurus or something. lol
The Metros don't have to be slow, you just have to drive the ever-lovin' piss out of 'em to make them fast
You gotta watch someone who knows how to abuse one then. They sure as hell aren't 1/4 mile fast, but if you really start tossing those things around the light weight and short wheelbase mean they can pedal along pretty good. It's not easy though, and they are tippy . . .
You can remove the trans without removing the engine. Fishbiker15 on the boards here has done this. He got a Geo (the one from the march ice race) a while ago with a bad trans and we swapped in a new one (tracker 5spd) in his garage. motor stayed in the car. FYI: the trans for that car is super light. It was shipped UPS lol.
