I'm really thinking about going to this, http://www.glacierlakesqclub.org/ But I haven't been to any audi club events before. Has anyone been to this or planning on going on Sunday? I need to go helmet shopping too, sounds like my 10 year old motorcycle helmet won't cut it...
Ok, I'm definately going. If anyone wants to drive with or ride along on sunday, let me know, I'll be leaving from the north metro area...
I would also be going from North, Brooklyn Park...so let me see if I can get the day off and I'll go fo sho! I've got a helmet and the car has been repaired since the last ice race!! So I should be good to go! Anyone else!!??
I've got to check the rating on my helmet. I think I read that they want snell 2000 or better. Otherwise I might run to Bob's Cycle tonight and see what they have.
Looks fun ... how noob-friendly is this event? Haven't done an ice race before, but wouldn't mind learning a thing or two..
Don't know what the rating on my helmet is, but it's a motorcycle helmet...should be good enough, otherwise the ad said there would be helmets for you to use at the event!
Can't speak on the Audi guys...but the subie guys will show love...i myself have only been to one ice event, I too have much to learn grasshopper!!
this event is extremely noob friendly, not chock full of experienced racers, more of a fun thing for audi club guys. I'm probably bring the wagon down there, along with a PSP because i spent most of the last one sitting in my car. Its more of a series of car control areas that you rotate through. with one of the being the track. Also if you don't have a sticker on your helmet lining that says "Snell 2000" or newer it probably is not allowed. If your helmet is more than 5 or so years old chances are it wont be legal. Snell standards shift up 5 years every 10 years, so a snell 2000 helmet is good until 2010, but a snell 95 helmet expired in 2005.
There's a thread on awdaddicts too that has some more info. Sounds like the extra helmets are available, but no guarantee and preference is given to mnaudi members. There's a discussion on evomn (linked from awda) that said they want snell 2000 helmets or better, so if your helmet has that, it should be fine. I'm pretty sure my helmet is too old to have that rating. Anyway, I don't know know their attitude as far as this event, but the few mn audi members I've met are cool. At one of the bmw driving schools there was an audi guy there who was willing to let me ride along in his car around the track and show me a few things. That was fun...
I just read that registration is full. People can still come and spectate or ride along. I did register on friday so I'm still going. I'll try to take a few pics tomorrow.
I just got back. I had a great time. The road course was 2 miles long and extremely slick. The track up at Rich's was a lot faster than this one was... Besides that they had a slalom course, skid pad and oval track. By the end of the day the skid pad was perfect, nice and smooth all the way around. The snowbanks were just big enough for people to get stuck in them. I wish I could have done a few more laps on the road course, but I did learn a lot on the skid pad and oval track.
I have a couple pics, but my little camera has very little zoom, so I didn't take too many. there were some people there with nice cameras and video cameras, so hopefully they'll share some pics and vids soon...
Looks like it was a blast! Wish I would have pre-registered, so I could have joined in on the fun...man, that is alot more snow than Rich had up north!
the course is still there... actually, the audi club does get a permit to run the event on that lake. I guess some lady calls the cops every year and gets told every year that they have a permit...
The times are up. I did better than I thought. 5th fastest run and 2nd fastest average over all runs of the 36 non-studded cars. The studded cars were running almost 2 minutes faster per lap,, crazy.... My fastest lap time was actually the run where I felt I was driving the slowest, but I didn't lose control or go off the course at all on that run... http://www.glacierlakesqclub.org/IceTrialTimes_02112007.htm
I knew it!! He looked to be going "Bawlz 2 da Wawlz" again, a repeat of Orr! Zack+Ice=:ladysman: LOVE!!!!! Anyone going to the upcoming race in Isanti the end of feb.?
