i have an underdriven lightweight and love it, but i also have a light flywheel, it revs like a motorcycle
I have the UR underdrive crank pulley. i like it, it was pretty easy to install and it does make a difference too. I noticed a slightly faster rev (not much but still) and more importantly more MPGs. i think when i first put it on i was seeing 2-3 more miles per gallon.
I have had one on for a while now.... here is a link to by thread. http://www.mnsubaru.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13453
I wonder how hard/long does it take to install the Crank Pulley and the Flywheel? Might get some for mine.
I might be getting one too pretty soon. Is the perrin lightweight pulley pretty good? How is it compared to other lightweight pulley brands?
I bought a cobb, just because I'm a brand whore and I don't want to underdrive. It certainly looks pretty cool. I'm waiting to put it in along w/ my cobb springs... whenever they get here... sheesh.
This is my 2nd Subaru with lightweight pullies installed by myself and the difference is noticible. You won't gain much horsepower, maybe 0-6 WHP, but as was said before the engine will rev better and the RPMs get a bit more sensative (a good thing compared to OEM). If you grandpa-shift your car like I do, it allows better revving and rev-matching with less effort and still have room for smooth shifts.
i have exoerienced 0 issues with it so far. no wierd noises or anything. kinda a bonus but i was able to use my AV belt (shorter cuase of underdrive) to fiz ~'s car on teh last duluth trp.
I've heard that some underdrive pulleys cause, over time, the front main seal or the oil pump to go bad due to the lack of a harmonic balancer (AKA the rubber in the stock pulley) which causes a lot more vibration. Has anyone experienced this problem?
What I have heard is that, at least on the STi and maybe all Subarus, there is no harmonic balancer. I could be wrong though. Something to do with the boxer design.
I put my pulley on just after i replaced the front main seal and oil pump. That was over 60k ago, and my oil pump and gront main seal are in good shape still. no leaks, and good oil pressure.
This was discussed as a possible problem way back in 1999 that I can remember. To date, there has been no recorded main bearing seals going out on a Subaru due to an installed lightened or underdriven crank pulley.
