Hell yes!!! 97' 5speed 225,xxx miles. Im 23 so insurance is high for me but relatively good in comparison to other cars. I think the tank is 13 gallons and by that # I get about 15-16 mpg, but I drive it VERY hard ALL the time and I rally the crap out of it. This is my 2nd Outback, my 3rd Subaru, and my 12th car so far and I will never by anything but a subaru.

Also I smashed the side of a 86' comaro in when he turned in front of me onto a one way. The rear wheel was bent on the comaro and from the drivers door back it was all caved in and the door was stuck. The Outback was perf. the front bumper was still their and NOT bent or broken the headlights werent even craked, the only problem was nasty diseased red comaro paint on the front bumper.
Also the car is almost fast. Ive raced and beten alot of crappy civics and V-6 mustangs and comaroes and trucks and well the list goes on.bottom line Its an extreemly versitile and FUN FUN FUN.

The seal between the engine and the tranny tends to go and leaks onto the Y pipe.
The alternator has a recall on some models.
The starter will need to be replaced more than likely.
The main crank pulley loosens and causes big wobbly freeway scare but is easily fixed.
Sensors go and are also easily replaced. (For the most part)
The car is really easy to work on.
You will want more power. (at least from the 2.2 Auto)
This is my experience at least.

I'm 24 and get a good deal on this car for insurance. I'm also a good driver and have been paying on time since I was 19 with the same insurer.

I have been able to get 400 miles on one tank when I'm trying to save gas. Slow starts, granny driving.
Get one with better suspension or invest in suspension and it will be like night and day. Reeeaaally takes a beating and keeps on ticking.
Lots of room in the wagon, AWD, ABS, disc brakes, boxer engine ~2k? Not bad IMHO.

EDIT: This is on a 96 Legacy L wagon

We just bought an '03 Legacy Outback.

The insurance is pretty cheap, in fact, cheaper than the '00 Civic sedan that it replaced, and cheaper overall than my '04 Mini Cooper.

What's interesting is that we pay less for the injury portion of the insurance for the Mini than we do the Outback. I guess that little Mini's body structure is every bit as strong as it feels. The rest of the sub-categories are cheaper for the Subaru (meaning I guess that the Mini is expensive to repair ;) ).

As far as reliability, I'll be darn happy if this car is as good as our Civic was. Honda does a nice job.

So far, I am not happy with the fuel economy in the Subaru, but we've only run one tank through it, and got 23mpg with about half of that tank being burned on the highway. Ouch. Our Civic usually got 30mpg in town, and 35-38 on the highway.

Anyhow, we're really happy with the subaru in a lot of ways. It drives really nicely, it's quiet, and it's very spacious. And the AWD should pull the thing up our driveway when it's snowy :D

We have a '97. I bought it with the dreded failed head gasket. a CCR EJ25 longblock and about 15 hours later I have a great car. It is the 4eat Trans, kind of soft, but then I din't buy it to hammer on (that's what my '05 RS is for :p ) We get 20mpg consistantly, I'd like to see a few more but still not bad for a brick. There are a few little things I need to fix ie the lights in the climate controls, but nothing that is more that an irritant. Later, Tim

    I've got a 97 Legacy Outback and it's amazing.

23.1 MPG on today's fillup...been as high as 25.5 MPG
Paid $6650 with 97k in excellent mechanical condition
$85/month to insure with State Farm and my limits are well above the state minimum, so you could probably get it for even less.

Had to replace lights behind the HVAC lights, the O ring between the PS pump and reservoir, but that's it so far in almost a year. Awesome car. Lots of room for helicopters.
