Last year my water heater went out and I wanterd to go tankless. At that time I was pricing water heaters and I called centerpoint about having them install a water heater. The person that I talked to was pretty sure that the gas line from the street would have to be larger to support the flow requirements for a tankless heater. I thought it was BS but it's probably worth checking into. Anyway other than that anyone installing a tankless heater will have to install completely new venting. I ended up installing a higher efficiency 60 gallon tank heater because I didn't have time to fool with things, and it was much cheaper.

Do some research via Consumer Reports which in brief states the longevity and the pay back involved with tankless is not very good. Going by memory since I looked into this couple months ago when my 50 gal "gas" water heater died. Should mention the heat time was not as great as expected, either. Most library's offer Consumer Reports for reviewing and making copies.
