So as many of you know my freind and I are building an ice racer by droping a 350 (3 bolt chevy) into a blazer, and we didn't have it done in time. Now we have a turbo for a duramax 6600 LB7, and we are going to use this turbo to get a few more pounds of boost. It is non varible vein, so simple control. We are aiming at 600+ out of this small block. My freind who is the "lead" on this has been reading up on turbo'ing carborated systems, but I am looking for non book stuff like, "I tried this and it screwed up and distroyed a small village, and then the engine died."
Any thoughts, laughs, or snyde comments?
Helpfull stuff will be read too.

2 bolt or 4 bolt?? No such thing as a 3 bolt. What mods done to the motor?? What comp ratio?? I have seen it done quite a bit actually. That is how I got started on imports. I know Holly make a blow through carb for turbos that include the intake hat. From there is is just basic stuff (exhaust plumbing, intake plumbing, etc). The biggest thing is to make sure that the lower end can handle the power increase. Oh ya, going to run some kinda of ic?

I need to recheck which main bolting we have, the fly wheel was 3, and as usual I have very scattered writing.
I thought all 350 were 4 bolt carbs....
As of right now we were not planing on ignition control untill we get the beast going, then probably some to retard the timing once we go past 4psi of boost.

IIRC procharger has a box that bolts to the manifold then you put the carb inside and then the top to the box goes on with the opening for the pipe from the turbo.

the berring cap had 4 bolts, so 4 bolt main.
Edit: yes was checked as 4 bolt main.
Sorry again Russ for my random thought posting. I know I need to be clearer for better responses.

I haven't thought too far to get to ic, and I am not sure soren has either. I know once we get past a little boost it would be a good idea. Do you have anything that comes to mind?

How about for fuel flow. Reason we missed bringing this guy up for an ice race was the dam in tank pump was shot. So at some point soon we will get a fuel pump. Still haven't decided for a new in tank, or moving to a fuel cell. As of right now I have never thought about this kind of thing.

How would you normaly size a fuel pump to match a system. I know part is the pressure it can put out, and the other is the flow rate. Sort of like sizing a compressor. But my problem is that for carb system most of the carbs are given by the cfm that they can pass. I assume they mean the cfm of air. Would you just match flow rate of the pump for your max rich settings, and then over size by 10-20%?

I just seen on Monster garage last night they supercharged a carb, I think it was vortech supercharger.

Yeah, we decided to go turbo because didn't want the parasitic loading on the belt. I know that is the same idea. I just like hearing what matt and russ have to say because they are smart. My freind is good but he is basicaly just old school N/A guy that is just getting into turbo systems.

fuel pump will have to be a low preasure pump otherwise you will push the fuel past the needle and seat in the carb. Remember a carb is just a siphon, air rushes by a hole and fuel is sucked out like a straw.

pontiac had a production turbo'd carb...and even though it was blown, it totally sucked, it was a 301 with a garret turbo with 9 psi of boost, it made 215 weezing horsies, but ive seen twin turbod carburated olds 455s pushing upwards of 1000 hp...so its all in the combos, make sure you have enough fuel running through it! and you should be fine

You have heard of summit and jegs correct?? Just get one of their monster fuel pumps (if you are shooting for 600hp you will need it). You will probably want to source a rising rate fuel pressure regulator (paxton, vortec, etc). Holly make the blow though carb (so you don't need the box). I will have to dig up some og my old pics. A friend has/had a old buick special (64 maybe) and he turbo'd it. I have a couple of pretty good pics of his setup. The biggest thing is just make sure the turbo is big enough. He went through 4-5 different semi turbos before he found one the he wouldn't over spin.

That would be awesome russ. Right now we have a turbo off of a Duramax 6600 (YB7) turbo deseil. It is sickly big. It looks like it was made by IHI who also makes the VF22 for the WRX, no?, but I couldn't find an easy website for them. It is a non-variable veine so we will use a mechanical bleed for control.

Matt that makes complete sense. I was getting it stuck in my head that I wanted to have more pressure in the line. Good think I posted on here before I started gonig at this part of the build. I am sure one of us building this would have said something but you never know.

Thanks guys, If you ever want to check this bucket out just ask. I still need to get around to posting pictures...

My freind worked it out for a 350 to theorectically be

    at 5psi it's theoretically 685hp
    at 10psi it's theoretically 1025hp
10 psi blowing the thing up... but theorectically.

I will definatly keep info coming as the build progresses.

Finally remembered to bring home the turbo pics to post up. Sorry for the bad quality, but they were scanned off of some older pics.

I think I have a few more, I will have to dig for them. If you have any questions about that setup let me know. I remember most of it.
