I just picked up another nice 86 XT 2wheel drive. It needs an ignition switch and I was wondering if it's still ava and if anyone knows how to change them out. Also need a gas tank and it has water pump issues I was told but I'm guessing a head. Car is from Washington State and is in nice shape other then the hack that tore the whole motor apart to get to the water pump. Key is stuck in car and wont turn. Gas tank as a whole in it like someone was pissed and puched a screw driver thru it on the bottom.

Will post some pictures when I get it cleaned up. Right now it looks like a garbage can from a fast food place. It was on Craigslist last week. Looks just like my XT only front wheel drive. Was thinking of fixing for my son's first car.

Can anyone help with with the ignition switch removal and if I can get a new one?

hmm.. it might be hard to get a new igintion switch for that. i would look up Subaru heaven. your chances of finding parts are much better there then anywhere else (if you can find the number).

The gas tank could be a easy temporary fix of quicksteel/jbweld i know it isnt the best way to fix something but it does work. i know a few people who have quick drying welding material on thier fueling compenents.

good luck! hope you can find the parts.

    Well

The hole is on the bottom, think it's best to pull it and take it to Tankrunew and get it welded.

The switch is another battle. I cant tell how they mounted it, the screws look like rivets with no heads on them. cant get in to drill them out.

    SHUT UP!!!

but yea....QuikSteel is perfect for gas tanks. VERY strong, and very long lasting. I've got some on the front of my EJ22 oil pan, some on the rad of the poopenvagon (I don't have it anymore...but it's still there), asweel as a bunch on the fuel lines of the poopenvagon. It's quick drying, and impervious to chemicals.

but, if I had the time and money to drop the tank (should be real easy for a FWD car), I'd get it welded.

as for the ignition switch....I have no idea how to remove it. BUT, I've got an entire steering column from my old '85 EA82. and it's got a good ignition switch, and a brand-new matching key. I'm sure my prent's would be ecstatic if it was no longer in their garage....

    Well

The switch is not in the steering column to a point. It's on the dash on a XT and as a arm that runs to the column to lock steering. I think I found one over on the XT6 board. As for the gas tank I will wait until spring and pull it out. The underneith of the car is very clan and the bolts all came loose. Just dont want to tie up the garage plus I need to put a water pump in it. With any luck they didnt warp a head.. Car runs good now, got it running today.

Hey Chux, do you have a set of timing belt covers, inner and outer I could buy from you? I had to bust these because all of the nuts turned and whoever started the pump project cracked them already.

I put pictures of all three in the general post.

oooo....I didn't know the XT had it in the dash.

yea, I've probably got some tbelt covers in decent shape somewhere. I had to smash one set off, but I think I've still got another. I'll look...
