As some of you may know, I'm not a fan of Audi's. This is the icing on the cake... My coworker had a '99 Audi A6. Saturday he went out to his car and started it up. He went into the house for a minute, came back out and his car was on fire. He had enough time to throw it into neutral and push it out of the garage. You can see the damage below. Worst part: He took off full coverage 2 days before to save a little extra cash. Audi has a known issue about the A6 starting electrical fires. They had a recall on that which my coworker had fixed. Clearly it did not fix the issue. As of right now, his insurance has paid him for his house damage, but he has not seen a dime for his car. We'll see what Audi has to say. I'll keep you up to date. I'll also be posting a movie clip whenever I get my hands on it.
Damn that sucks. More then likely it had a fuel fire. The injector o-rings and main fuel feed line have leak problems.
Guess it's not just limited to VW's . ****ty situation, though. Wish him the best of luck getting some money back.
In the mid 80s I had a 76 Audi 100LS that caught fire while I was driving it. On a bridge. Great big flames out the front of the car. I bailed as did the passenger but the back seat guy couldn't get the seat up. I went back and helped him out. I'll never own one again.
Yep. True cost to own of a VW/Audi is astronomical. Could even cost you your life. Friends don't let friends buy audi.
fuel problem, they are well aware of it and the electrical ground problems as well. i swear, they had recalls and TSBs
dibs on the, ugh, headlight projector!!! I'm suprised that the shroud didn't melt. He started his car while still in the garage? Should have let it burn the whole garage (unattached to the house?) down, then your home owners insurance would have covered the car since it was in the "structure."
Any bodily injury done to the owner? Any problems with Audi, The Consumerist would probably love to get this story on their web page.
Nope. Everyone is ok. The garage is attached to the house. He just bought the house less then 6 months ago.
I think you're right on that, but is it worth the hassle? <shrug> I'm not certain that car insurance, even with full coverage, will take care of fires that started with some electromechanical/fuel fault within the car itself. Hopefully the car is old enough that it won't be a large financial burden on the guy. Sad to see, regardless of the brand.
Wouldn't that be some sort of comprehensive claim? He obviously didn't wreck it. Any adjuster could see that it almost took his house out with it.
what are you talking about audi's are GREAT cars... untill they catch fire or have electrical problems anyway.
Looks like one hack of a BBQ, why weren't we invited! JK That's really too bad that had to happen, hope things will work out. Thanks for the post.
Glad i sold my 1.8t for my wrx!!! i will add this to the long list of reasons NOT to buy an audi when i tell people who ask me about them weekly saying "i just want luxury" ****, the leather isnt even SOFT! they must let the cow riggor for about 3 years and then make the seats! and who wants to pay $175 for a HEADLIGHT SWITCH?
