I'm trying to get an idea on costs involved purchasing a Cobbs TBE and getting a tune. Let's assume none used parts. Are we talking $2K?

I know this is vague..I hope to start a conversation on different possibilities.

Yup, thats the cheap end. If you wanted really cheap, you could probably get exhaust parts for real cheap and have everything done for less then $400.

Hah, sounds like you want the high end:

    Cobb TBE: $1300
    Access Port: $700
    Tune: $500

    Total: $2500

Cliffs: Stage 2 can be had for anywhere in between $400 to $2500.

Agree with Carl. You can find some used TBE ($400) and tune with Nate (~$200). Save the rest for suspesion work :)

Hah, unless you have the hardest to tune Subaru ever, the tune will be much cheaper then that :). Anyway, my tuning prices depend on the car and mods. Like my sig says, PM for details.

Ebay has some screaming deals on used exhaust stuff at times. TXS Stealthbacks to be had for less than 400 bucks.

    I did it pretty cheap.

    Used TXS downpipe: $175
    New TXS Catback Adapter: $100
    Used STi catback: $50
    OTS tune: FREEBIE </monster garage>

    $325 and I'm at Stage 2 on my 06.

I suppose I could list the Tactrix cable as well ($90?), but I also could have had someone else flash it if I didn't already have one.

depends on what you mean when you say "stage 2" i think the word "stage" is just a marketing tool.

but ill work with you here... assuming you mean basic bolt-ons. up-pipe, downpipe, cbe, header, and a tune you are probably right around 600 bucks using mediocre parts.

I sure do love an active community! I was expecting a few ideas, but I think I had 4 or 5 in the first 10 minutes.

I think my main goal is to use quality parts so I have a good platform for building on later on.

For the TBE, I like the COBBS ($1225 at MAP -going to shop around though), it sounds great and provides some solid performance. It also takes care of the DownPipe too. I'm going to go with a GMBCS ($40-50?) since I've heard nothing but good things about it and lower RPM torque would be nice. I'll most likely have BullWinkle perform an open ECU tune. ($??) I'm going to leave the UpPipe stock since the STI UpPipe seems to do a good job at stage 2.

How about injectors and would a stage 2 need the upgrade?

    Opinions are welcome!

No upgraded injectors needed for Stage 2.

Yeah, I definitely went the cheap route and I'm regretting the downpipe purchase. Budget doesn't really allow anything else at the moment though.

    Have fun with the Cobb!

As a cobb owner, I will tell you this right now.. I love everything about this exhaust.

Personally, I would try to find it used. Take a look at my exhaust and tell me if it's new or used? The only way you'll know it's used is Scuba Steve's love stain on it from when he used to own it.

No really. It's stainless exhaust. My whole TBE system is used, but you'd never know it.

    1. It's under the car, who's going to look
    2. All of my stuff is stainless or coated, you'd never know it was used
    3. I paid a whole lot less, My exhaust setup new is close to $1,800.
    4. Cobb stuff, IMO, looks nice. I'm not a fan of the large can style exhaust.. unless it's genome.

Just my $.02. You're more then welcome to listen to my setup. I'm at firestone most friday's. I try to introduce myself to everyone. Just ask me to fire it up.

    Hope that helps,

    Ryan

cwin, what car is this going on?

I personally did not like the Cobb on my STI at all. It sounds much better on Ryan's 2.0L flowing less air.

Anyway, the average cost of a stage 2, as Nate mentioned really varies. I would put the high end much much higher tho. There are baller $2000 cat back exhausts out there that some people just have to have. There are also some really expensive downpipes out there as well.

The used market really is the way to go, especially with Cobb stuff since they've been around long enough that there are a good amount of Cobb exhausts out there.

If you decide to go used, just check the cat if it is catted, check the weld between the muffler and the inlet pipe into the muffler, invert the muffler a couple times to see if the fiberglass is separating, if you go with a different downpipe with the Cobb catback, check to make sure the flange mates up, and finally check for clearance between the intermediate pipe and the driveshaft.

You have the tendency to smell however, so dont stand too close to him.

Oh and IMO there is no better sounding exhaust then the invidia g200 cat-back on a subaru (biased)

+1 on the smell. Ryan brings the funk.

I'm a big fan of the TurboXS Stealthbacks, they don't have the same "bling" as a Cobb setup but they're a great exhaust setup and you'll win the "My pipe is bigger than yours" every time ;)

IMO the best sounding exhaust I've heard was a Stealthback mated to a Prodrive round tip. :yumyum:

    I bought used parts.

    I have $525 into:
Prodrive BCS, AEM cold air intake(then powerdcoated it black, and a waterproof filter cover), Invidia V3 downpipe that was heat wrapped, greddy cat-back, car had a up-pipe on it already, and its getting tuned by bullwinkle tomorrow.

Absolutely! You can sign up here:
    http://www.iwsti.com/forums/register.php

Talk to your tuner about the injectors. Some prefer different injectors on the 07 sti specifically. Also, depending on your "stage 2" setup, you may be able to make significant gains with larger injectors.

Ebay has worked for me, the last two Stealthbacks I bought were both off of STIs.
