what program can I get for free that will burn my files to the disc? So I can watch them through the DVD player and not just my computer.

    Thanks

You'd need to convert them to MPEG format, and then burn them to a DVD.

Although, some DVD players can play SVCD.

That tech is kinda dead, tho.

Any video editing program should be able encode DVDs for you. There're a ton out there. Some of the more popular software packages are:

    Adobe Premier or Premier Elements
    Pinnacle Studio
    Sony Vegas Studio

Here's a good link I found with video software reviews and details. If you're encoding .AVIs, make sure the program you choose can do whatever codec your AVI's are in (DivX or Xvid, typically).

Not that it's any help, but my DVD player plays DivX/XviD files directly off a disc, so re-encoding is not necessary. I've also seen DVD players here that have a built in USB socket for thumb drives, which means you can play your avi files directly on your TV without even having to burn the discs first. And these things are stupid cheap.

How much more do you hate the MPAA/RIAA now ?

I also have my laptop hooked into the 2nd HDMI port on my TV via the docking station I have for it, but it's very rarely docked. But yes, there's lots of options these days for playing avi files on your TV without having to master a DVD.

I also tried Nero for this one time, and it seemed to work well. I even paid for the upgrade to the full version a few months ago, because it's a really good suite of tools, even if I'm not using the DVD mastering part of it.
