Here goes another bad experience I had. First of all, I'm "Asian" and only 21 yrs old. So probably a agent probably think I'm just waisting time. (i felt kinda racist on this case)
    Aniways,
Me and my family were looking to buy a home. So I scheduled online a house in Brooklyn Center for a showing. Few hours later an agent calls me and we discuss the time. Everythings set. 20mins later she call me back and said she talked to the owner of that house and the owner were just wondering if I've been Pre-approved yet. She told me that the "reason" why she ask that b/c they dont want any working at "Mc Donalds" trying to apply for a house. Well, that freaking piss me off. I just told her "oh ok, JUST CANCEL IT THAN". She ask me am I sure, "YES I"M SURE", I replied and just hung up.

-As a agent she CANNOT assume I work at Mc Donalds.
    -She's violating something here,
-Its NONE of here business if I'm pre-approved or not, My grandpa could left me Millions to cash the house, who knows.(its ok if she just ask "this" question and dont go on with the Mc. Donald thing).

So now I'm trying to request this conversation from my phone company.
Forgot her name but she did told me where her office is, in BC. This is Re/Max Reatly

    What do you guys think?

I think that in the law it's written that they can turn you down for whatever reason - including if they feel like your income level is not within a certain guideline - if they feel you cannot afford the place after a certain amount of time, they can decline you. Basically, they are taking a risk when they take you on, and they need to weigh all aspects of the decision. I think, that in this market lately, you will get this reaction a lot. It's best to not take it personally, and move on to the next agent (assuming you have more than one)on your list.

you're trying to buy a house - maybe act like it instead of throwing a hissy fit because some lady said something a little "politically incorrect"

oh yea, forgot to mention that the Owner asked am I pre-approved b/c the "gas" prices these days are getting high and that they want a serious buyer. Making their trip out of the house "worth" it.

To be honest, thats where I get pissy.

It's just like the car biz. Elimate the tire kickers from the buyers...If everyone came in the dealership with a sticker on there forehead saying: Tire kicker, Buyer, joy riders, what's my trade worth?, Cash buyer, etc. It would make things easier for the salesperson. But it isn't a perfect world and in sales you have to ask those questions that will determine how much time you need to spend with them. Now as for anything extra, comments and answers that the salesperson say or in this case a realtor, can also determine whether you lose a sale or gain one.

In this case it sounds like it isn't racist, but discrimination...(did I spell that correctly?)

The owner said because the gas prices these days are getting high and that they do not want to make a trip out of the house, so that you can see it? Are you assuming this?

The owner has this right to ask.

    The owner asked this question?
Or did the Agent ask the question?

I am not trying to nit-pick here, but it is important who it is asking the question. Due to the housing laws, there is supposed to be no discrimination, buuuut..... people of all nationalities are ethnocentric, pretty much the same as racism, example.... Americans only marry Americans, or Chinese are only to marry Chinese, bla bla blah. This can be "tradition", but thats another way of giving it a nice name, It goes on everywhere, unfortunately.

My Dad was a Realtor for quite some tme, but has let his license expire. I asked him these questions before he went to bed.

Yes, she have the right to know if I'm pre-approved or not but the thing is that she make it sounds like I'm just some dude with a unstable job like working at Mc Donald. I mean that makes the buyer sounds like the agent his turning the buyer down assuming negative stuff.

This is what the agent said to me:
"I've just talked to the owner and they're just wondering are you pre-approved? b/c they dont want to waiste any time if they're not dealing with a serious buyer. The reason why I ask you this question b/c you know, "we" dont want anybody working at Mc Donalds trying to apply for a house."

If that is what the agent said about working at McD, than he/she is an idiot and shouldn't even be in real estate (I would have said, what about if I work for McD's? I handle 700+ operations my title is VP of Operations for the midwest region), GL on trying to get a recording of it...

To be quite honest with you, all of you, most real estate agents are dumber than a box of rox. It takes jack **** to get a real estate license. There are a few good ones out there, but they are hard to find. Seriously, I've the dumbest, more asinine people make a living being a real estate agent, its hilarious. I've seen a girl be successful at real estate just because she has huge cans. WTF?

Get another agent you really like. They make a good chunk of change for the work involoved if you do buy. Might as well see that go to an agent you respect. Previous poster "buck up and move on"...good advice.

not to step on any toes... think of this in terms of selling your car.
would you let someone joyride in your car and then walk away and say thanks?

you have the right to refuse letting someone in your property for whatever reason you choose just as much as they do.

this isn't a race issue... this is a case of "don't waste my time because i've delt with too many people just "browsing" and i'm sure it's getting annoying to them

Get pre-approved regardless. That way if it does come up you can shove it their face and say "...how ya like me now, beeyotch! I'm gunna drown you in my gravy..." Or something like that...I digress.

We just bought our first house, and before we even looked at a single listing, we got pre-approved.

This way, you know your price range, then you can narrow down what area, then narrow down your list of houses in that area.

IMO going to look at houses without being pre-approved is a waste of everyone's time. Good luck on the house hunt though!

You answered your own question right there. If you walk into the Ferrari dealer and ask for a test drive, do they not have the right to refuse it to you?

I think the McDonald's comment was a generality about income level. If the house is expensive enough that you're not going to be able to pay for it with sort of income level, then it IS wasting their time.

Don't waste your time being upset - just get the pre-approval done and start shopping again.

Last, have you lined up a "buyer's agent"? This is one of the smartest things you can do when shopping for a house. Remember that the selling agent is not working on your behalf. You do not pay extra for a buyer's agent - the commission is split between the two agents working on the sale, so instead of 6% going to the selling agent, both agents get 3%.

You know, you might even use her as your buyer's agent, but not for that particular house. At the very least, you've found one that won't try to bull**** you and soften the bad news.

LOL ^^^^^^^ Tom good one. Don't think the world is out to get you all the time. It seems like when ever your in a situation with a sales person you think there out to get you. Remember when you went to the dealership on a sunday?? Just like everyone else said grow some thick skin. If they would have said that to me I would have laughed and said no I work at White Castle or some other fast food resturant. Please get pre-approved frist because it will make things a lot easier.

Oh - and here's why you get pre-approved. With the pre-approval in hand, the seller knows that you've taken your financial info to a bank and the bank has decided that the numbers will allow you to buy a house costing $xyz,000. You start looking around at houses in that range, saving you time since you're not looking at houses outside of your range.

The seller knows that the people making offers have a better chance of getting loan approval. This is important since having an offer may convince other buyers not to make their own offers. Without pre-approval, you make an offer, talk to the bank, bank takes a week or so to do their thing, and meanwhile the seller thinks they have a buyer. During that time, they may be turning away other offers or not receiving offers at all since yours is already on the books. Then your loan doesn't go through. Now the seller has lost a week or two and maybe a few offers since those buyers looked elsewhere. So it MAY waste the sellers time and money.

And with pre-approval, much of the loan paperwork is already done which can give you an earlier closing date.

Like I said, don't get upset about it - there's a reason for the pre-approval process, especially with the current troubles in the lending industry.

    Good luck shopping.

There a re two (edit: 2.5) things you should do before you start looking at houses.

    *edit*
.5 EDUCATE YOURSELF ON THE PROCESS OF BUYING A HOME AND KNOW WHAT YOU CAN (SHOULD) AFFORD. Most foreclosures are due simply to the fact that buyers didn't know what they were doing when they bought a home and got suckered into a mortgage that was more than they could afford. It's just like buying a car. The lender will try to screw you a little. Be prepared.
    *edit*

    1. Get pre-approved through the institution of your choice.

    2. Find an agent you like to represent you. This way you don't have to deal with the other seller's agent (or the seller at all for that matter). Let your agent do the leg work for you. A good agent can make the process painless. Real-Estate agents also usually have a relationship with a lender agent. Sometimes your agent can get you a good deal on your mortgage through a referral.

If my problems were as small as this, I would be a happy man.

get pre-approved. The lady might have a bug up her ass, so just tell her to F off and find someone else. people say nasty crap to others all the time, its just the way the world works. taking problems like this to MNSubaru is only going to backfire on you.

In all of the sales jobs I have worked, a lot of managers base initial judgments on assumptions, as sad as it may sound. not a perfect world yet...

sucks that you had a bad experience, but I would say sprout some seeds down low and tell that woman what you feel and maybe it will get her thinking. hanging up on her just makes you sound less serious. call that lady back up and lay down the F'in law man.
